Kids and dogs need training

Prince Albert Daily Herald

The story of a two-year-old girl recovering from a violent dog attack has captured the attention of the community. Hearts go out to the toddler who had much of the soft tissue in her face ripped off by a severe bite.

The dog that bit the child was under observation in quarantine at press time. A decision has yet to be made about the dog’s fate. Seven other dogs belonging to the same owner, who RCMP say is fully co-operating with their investigation, have already been destroyed.

These are tragic circumstances for everyone involved, and especially the little girl, who has required extensive medical treatment for her injuries.

When it comes to interaction between dogs and people — especially children — it should never be forgotten that there is a potential for danger. Both dog owners and parents must be vigilant to prevent these kinds of bites.

Dog owners should be sure to properly train and socialize their dogs so they are ready to interact with people and other animals. They should be properly supervised at all times and should not run loose or remain tied up and isolated. And they must acknowledge there is no way to completely be sure their dog will never bite, and err on the side of caution when introducing their dogs to new people and circumstances.

The Humane Society of the United States gives these guidelines for teaching kids to act responsibly around dogs. They tell them to speak quietly and move slowly around dogs, and follow these simple rules:

• Before petting someone’s dog, ask the person’s permission. If it’s okay, approach slowly and quietly. Let the dog sniff you first, then pet the dog’s sides or back gently.

• Never sneak up on or pet a dog who is eating or sleeping or playing with a toy.

• Never try to pet a dog who is in a car or behind a fence. Most dogs naturally protect their property and home.

Education and responsible behaviour can help prevent dog bites.

Here here!
Although, I approach dogs differently though. I crouch down and let the dog come to me and sniff me to his hearts content, then I slowly pet their chest area or their sides. Not their head or shoulders. And I don't make eye contact if the dog is shy.

I have a question...I visit the local shelter every so often and when I go through looking at the different dogs, is it alright to make eye contact with the dogs in their kennels? or would it be better to avoid this?

I really don't know. I guess everything I was taught and everything I've read about is to not make eye contact with a strange dog. But I only put that into practice if the dog is behaving "iffy" (not shy, but not friendly either...kinda...standoffish maybe?) or if the dog is really shy.
