Personality Test Matches People With Dogs

Rescue Leagues Hopes You'll 'Meet Your Match'
PROVIDENCE -- Looking for the perfect mate -- of the canine variety?

NBC 10's Dylan Dreyer reported the Providence Animal Rescue League will give you a test to help you find a dog that matches your personality type.

"The adopter is going to fill out a Meet Your Match questionnaire, as well, to find out what kind of dog they're looking for that's going to work in with their personality," said Jean McGroarty, of the Providence Animal Rescue League.

After you take the personality test, you're given a pass and you match it to cards on the cages specifying the dogs' personality traits.

How is a dog's personality determined?

"Well, there are several exercises that you need to do. They involve play. How playful is the dog? What the dog does when he's left alone. How the dog reacts to human beings," McGroarty said.

Anna Cabral, who works at the rescue league, was skeptical of the Meet Your Match program at first, but not now.

"We really had a dog that was about 109 pounds, Lab mix. And he was really unruly, obnoxious. It was hard for us to place him until I did the Meet the Match on him. I got totally a different view on him, and he got placed pretty quickly," Cabral said.

Now, more dogs and adopters are finding the perfect match.

"It's fun. It's colorful. It's a great way to meet an animal, and like I said, it's like a dating service. It's great," McGroarty said.

I took a class on shelter/rescue/humane issues and they discussed this type of class. They then went to our local shelter and test the dogs there so they could run the test w/ the class. I volunteer at the shelter and know most of the dogs well. At the end of the test they had selected one of my favorite dogs as one of 2 I should adopt. The test is not full proof though and has some room for error.
