Noise warning to dog owners

Evening Leader
Wrexham and FLintshire Edition

DOG owners in Wrexham are being warned that they could face a fine of up to £5,000 if their pets cause a noise nuisance to neighbours.

The problem caused in Wrexham’s neighbourhoods by barking dogs is being highlighted by Wrexham Council today as part of Noise Action Week 2006.

Victoria Picken, from Wrexham’s public health team, will be donning a Scooby Doo outfit and handing out leaflets and doggie treats to Monday Market and town centre visitors.

The number of complaints about noisy dogs to the public protection service has increased recently and officers have produced a leaflet that outlines what can be done to prevent dogs’ excess barking.

If the noise is too much, it can be classed as a “statutory nuisance” and owners could be prosecuted and be fined up to £5,000.

While barking is quite normal and natural for dogs, the constant whining or barking can be annoying and upsetting for neighbours.

There are however, things that can be done to stop them from barking frequently and a handy leaflet has been produced to advise dog owners of the steps to take to identify the reason why their dog may be barking too much and gives suggested remedies.

Andy Lewis, Wrexham's chief public protection officer, said: “People often don't realise that their dog’s barking is causing a nuisance to their neighbours until they get a call or letter from us.

“There are many things that can be done to prevent barking and I would recommend all dog owners read the leaflet and take the advice on board.”
