Tough love for dangerous dog owners

Illinois is the latest state to create tough legislation directly related to dangerous dogs and to the owners of those dogs. Following recent incidents involving dangerous dogs and young children, Rod Blagojevich, Governor of the state signed three bills, putting the new laws into place.

The toughened laws will see convicted dangerous dog owners receiving a longer prison sentence, the longest of which can now be extended to 7 years depending on the actions of the dog. Dogs must be spayed and or neutered, and properly restrained.

One change to the existing law, makes the state of Illinois the first state to ban certain criminal figures such as drug dealers, and other bad individuals of the criminal mind, from owning certain breeds of dog that are deemed to be dangerous.
