Summer Classic Dog Show in OKC

Dogs are jumping with excitement as they compete this weekend in the Summer Classic Dog Shows in downtown Oklahoma City.

Wendy Musgrove, from the Oklahoma City Kennel Club, says people have come in from across the country to compete in this weekend's competition.

Dog handlers spend a lot of time primping their dogs for the competition. Sarah Dulski shows poodles, and says it takes three hours just to bathe and blow dry the dogs. She says it's worth the hassle to make these dogs beautiful.

Sarah says, "It's a chance for me and my dogs to hang out and enjoy each other."

Other handlers say they too do whatever they can to keep their dogs in shape and looking their best.

Perry Payson is a professional handler. He brought seven dogs to this weekend's competition. Not all are his, he has been hired to show dogs for those who cannot attend this weekend.

Perry says you have to work with the dogs everyday to make them behave the way you want. He raises rotweilers. One of his dogs is currently the number female in her breed.

One great thing about the dog show is it gives you a chance to talk to owners of different breeds and find out if they would be a good fit for your family. Organizers have an area set up to not only talk to the owners, but to play with the dogs. Wendy says they do this because it's important to know about a dog before you buy one. She recommends talking to those who own the breed your interested in and figure out if that breed will be good with you or your children.

Vendors are also on hand this weekend. From professional portraits to clothing for you and your pup, there's something for everyone. The Summer Classic Dog Show will be in town through Sunday.

Tickets are available at the door. Dogs not entered in the competition are not allowed.

And, for that added bit of excitement, one of the winners bit a judge. An Akita who had won in the open bitch category was passed by another dog and lashed out.
