RSPCA worried domestic dogs dying from wild dog baiting

ABC News

The RSPCA says state and local governments are not doing enough to ensure the baiting of wild dogs in Queensland is carried out safely.

It wants regulations regarding the laying of 1080 baits strengthened and enforced.

The RSCPA says in recent months it has had more reports of domestic dogs dying as a result of 1080 poisoning - where animals have picked up poorly laid baits aimed at controlling wild dogs.

It says one drover has lost 14 working dogs to poisoning and the State Government should act.

Local councils coordinate baiting programs, but Local Government Association of Queensland spokesman Greg Hallam says he is unaware of any major problems.

"We're yet to see any proof of what the RSCPA says, but we believe most councils act responsibly," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Minister for Natural Resources says the Government is involved in a project to look at an alternative control for wild dogs.
