Canine distemper detected in Chicago

June 9, 2004 — Animal control officials in Chicago say canine distemper has been detected in the city and dog owners should make sure their pets have been inoculated against the disease.

Canine distemper is highly contagious and potentially fatal to dogs and some wild animals, including foxes, ferrets, skunks and raccoons. Doctor Marek Dygas of Chicago Animal Care and Control says the viral disease can cause problems with an animal's breathing, digestion and nervous system. Symptoms include convulsions, vomiting, fever and depression.

It would be terrible if they have an outbreak...but so many dogs are not vaccinated.
