Dog killer on the loose?

Roberta Pennington, Windsor Star

Published: Wednesday, September 20, 2006

An east Windsor woman is warning that an animal killer may be on the loose poisoning local pets.

Her own dog, a 61/2-year-old labrador-bullmastiff mix named Sydney, had to be euthanized Sunday.

"She made our family complete," 32-year-old Karey MacDonald said
tearfully. "And the house is empty now."

It was the only way to end the pet's increasing suffering, which
started with a mysterious stomach rash Tuesday and slowly progressed to internal bleeding and vomiting.

When she took Sydney to the Brack Animal Hospital Saturday morning, she was told her pet was dying.

"They said that she had poisoning and they basically said it was
Coumadin warfarin -- rat poisoning -- that she had ingested rat
poisoning," MacDonald said, still expressing disbelief. After all,
Sydney never ventured beyond her owner's front yard or fenced
backyard.

Sydney was given medicine to help fight the toxin, but it was useless.

"She ended up bleeding out, she was vomiting blood," MacDonald
said. "If I would've known what the symptoms were of rat poisoning or any kind of poisoning, I would have brought her to the vet
automatically on the Tuesday when I saw her stomach. It looked like
she had been kicked -- black and blue -- but what it was, was her
blood clotting."

MacDonald said a Windsor police officer who took her criminal
complaint told her someone may be deliberately killing neighbourhood animals "just to get their jollies."

"I believe my dog is the eighth pet to have been poisoned by rat
poison in the last month," MacDonald said, recounting what the
officer told her. "He said there have been a lot of cases of the
exact same thing, same area."

MacDonald said she has also heard talk in her Ellrose Avenue
neighbourhood recently of other animals succumbing to poison.

Windsor police Staff Sgt. Vince Power could not confirm MacDonald's
allegation Tuesday night.

"I'm not aware of that," Power said. "That may be, but I'm not
familiar with it."

John Roushorne, general manager of the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society, said he had not received any reports of poisoned pets, but
expressed anger over the news, calling the alleged poisoning "an
absolute heinous offence.

"Rat poison is nasty, it's a terrible, terrible way to die,"
Roushorne said. "If anybody is putting rat poison outside and we can
catch up with them, they will be in jail. It's as simple as that."

MacDonald said she hopes pet owners to be more vigilant.

"I just want people to know to watch their animals, look in their
yards, see if there's anything there, just to look around," MacDonald
said.

This is quite a scarey situation, although this isn't happening in my immediate area, it is only about a 5 minute drive away. If this is a case of intentional poisoning, I hope this person is caught soon, or that this article makes them think twice about attempting to try it again.

that has been happening in new york lately too

this guy throws meat over fences in dog runs/parks and he puts pins in them and the pins rip the dogs intestine

this has been happening for like 5 months already i am afraid to take my dogs to the runs/parks now (i used to go all the time)

Some people are so cruel! It always floors me that there are people that would do that intentionally! Makes me mad! And because everyone doesn't see pets as family memebers not everyone cares either... Those criminals should be caught and locked away for eternity!
