Run With the Big Dogs' raises $5,000

By Debbie Bryce - Idaho State Journal

POCATELLO - The annual “Run With the Big Dogs” event raised more than $5,000 to benefit the Pocatello Animal Shelter and programs to help local pet owners, said Mary Remer, animal control director.

More than 250 people turned out Saturday with their pets to participate in the 2.5K or 5K walk sponsored by Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter.

“There are people that have been back every year,” Remer said.

Mary Thompson was at the run with Skyler, a champion Border Collie, the two took part in the 2.5K walk. She said the event was a great way to spend some time outside with her pet and support the local animal shelter.

Her friend, Jane Guidinger brought her Irish Setter, Kilo. She said the lean animal could have easily gone two more kilometers.

The friends said they've only missed one of the annual “Run with the Big Dogs” event since its inception nine years ago.

“It's a fun event and way to support the shelter,” Guidinger said.

All the walkers received commemorative T-shirts compliments of Phil Meador and the Pocatello Animal Shelter brought 14 dogs, that were available for adoption.

Aunt Bea, a Blue Heeler cross, found a home before the run was over.

Remer said the money raised Saturday will help fund community programs like Healthy Cats, aimed at assisting local residents to spay and neuter their felines.

Pat Bystrom and her dog Corky were back for the third year.

“It's for a good cause,” she said.

Bystrom said that Corky, a mixed breed, enjoyed the walk.
