Dog gnaws baby's toes off!!!!

I read about this this morning on the verizon homepage. Apparently, the couple was sleeping on a mattress on the floor and the one month old baby was asleep in an infant car seat. Their 6 week old pit bull puppy gnawed off the babies toes! The parents said they woke to the crying baby and toke her to the hospital. A vet said that it was possible that the puppy was trying to nurse on the infants toes.
This happened in LA.
HOW STUPID ARE PEOPLE? Okay, my next question is why was this puppy already away from it's mother at 6 weeks?

my question is why was the baby at the height level of a 6 wk old puppy (or any dog for that matter) unattended? How did that happen?? I can understand the pitbull trying to nurse but if Mom and Dad wanted to take a bink while the 1 month old was taking a bink, why didn't they put the baby in it's nursery first?

The parents have been charged with neglegence and I'm glad! It's a 1 month old! Not a grocery sack! I may not be a parent, but how could you be that irresponsible a month post-partum? I heard on FoxNews where doctors have said that they probably won't be able to put the baby's toes back on!! Bless it's little heart!!

And what's worse is authorities will probably have these puppies put down and more people will say stay away from pits because of what's happened. The puppy was hungry and do you really expect it to know the difference between toes and nipples?

I just can't fathom not wanting to make sure my newborn was comfy in its crib before I went to take a nap! Even then, I'd be in the nursery with the baby while it slept!! I'd probably be in a rocker with it after a month! A six-month-old, yeah, I'll be doing what I can while the babies snoozing but not a month! And if I had puppies and a baby, my whelping box would be in a room far from that baby!!

Ok, I gotta get off the soap box before I slip! Sorry if someone disagrees but that's my opinion. LoL

I'm wondering why the baby wasn't screaming it's head off after just one bite from the puppy?????? Those parents must have been drunk or on drugs. How horrible!!

That's exactly what I thought. Drugs or aclohol had to be involved. One article that I read about it had one of the doctors saying that it would take about an hour to have the extent of damage that the little baby had. Poor thing had to be screaming in pain.

That's what I wondered, too. If the parents were right next to the baby, why didn't they hear the cries early on?

Of course, you have to keep in mind that they have both a 6-week-old pit-bull puppy AND a one-month-old baby. I'd question their sanity right there to adopt a young puppy so soon after having a child.

Same thing sprang to mind with me - some people shouldn't be allowed to have children OR dogs

Something is seriously wrong with this story- Too many missing pieces. It's more bad publicity for pitbulls.

Yip have to agree with rmci and brkcollie. I dont believe a word of it myself. Just because it is in the news it doesnt make it true! Either the baby was left on its own totally in the house so that would explain them not hearing the SCREAMS (as im sure it would be more than a cry coming from the baby.) or it has been exagerated to gain interest in a story.

I don't think the puppy was hungry, probably just wanted to chew something and the baby's foot seemed the most fun.

I agree that this story is full of holes and that APBTs will not have been done any favours by it.

Such a shame this happened. I feel so sorry for that baby and I hope the parents get what they deserve.

Cass.

That throws another interesting angle onto the whole thing. I've never seen a ferrett so sorry if this is a stupid question - but I'm guessing it is possible for a ferrett to actually do something like that isn't it??

The ferret's mouth is not much bigger than that of large rodent and I've heard of rodents doing this. However, I've never heard of a rodent chewing off multiple digits. Therefore, I just don't know if that weasel could remove multiple toes fast enough for the parents to not be alerted in time to stop it.

As Cass said, this story is full of holes. New questions:
1. You'd think that the doctors could determine which animal did it.
2. Why didn't the parents wake up after the first bite? I'm sure the child cried.
3. Why are the parents' stories different?
