Local dog training club offers classes for all ages

By Tribune Staff - Great Falls Tribune

You can teach old dogs new tricks. Young pups too. The Great Falls Dog Training Club offers classes for all ages.

For beginner dogs, ages 4 months and older, classes start Jan. 9 with collar fitting. After that, classes will meet at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays for eight weeks.

The handler-owner will receive a written lesson plan to practice at home. Because dogs learn by repetition, praise and experience, they need to work approximately 15 minutes a day with their owners. At the end of the eight weeks, dogs should be heeling on leash, coming when called and responding to other practical commands.

Dogs who have graduated from the basic class can be enrolled in a polishing class. This class puts the finishing touches on the well-trained household pet. It also can be the start of the fun sport of obedience competition. The class starts Monday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Rally is another class for dogs with basic training. This class, which begins Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m., teaches the owner and dog to work as a team while negotiating a set course.

Puppy kindergarten for dogs 2 to 4 months old begins Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m. The class covers puppy issues, including socializing, nipping, dominance and house training.

Classes cost $75. Discounts are available. Classes are in the Ursuline Centre gym on 23rd Street South, off Central Avenue. Money raised through the classes is used to pay expenses, train instructors and help sponsor the three-day American Kennel Club obedience trials on Labor Day weekend.

For information, call Marie Gamradt, 761-5603. Preregistration is required.
