SPCA raids alleged Quebec puppy mill.

CanWest News Service

Published: Friday, January 19, 2007

ST. MATHIEU, QUE. - Thirty-two cold and hungry dogs of various
sizes and breeds were seized Thursday by animal welfare workers at an alleged puppy mill in this town south of Montreal.

Linda Robertson of the SPCA-Monteregie said the animals had no water, little or no food and were living in their own filth.

''One of the huskies had food but it was rotten food and he wasn't eating it,'' said Robertson.

Three of the dogs had recently given birth, but their puppies were no where to be found on site. Two others were found pregnant.

Seven huskies were found behind a barn, tied to barrels. Tossed in with them were live rabbits also rescued Thursday, who may have served as food.

Almost all of the animals had some sort of sickness.

''These (mills) are everywhere. We always come back to the same issue: there's no compulsory registration of these breeders. And most of these puppies go to the pet store,'' Robertson said.

Robertson said some of the dogs already have foster homes and they will work to find homes for others.

The rescue started with a tip to police from an area resident. The SPCA investigated for a week before a judge signed off on a seizure of the dogs.

Detectives found the owner of the building, a woman who rented it to someone else, said Constable Guy Lepine. Police were trying to track down the renter, who could face criminal charges.

I am very sad to say but Quebec( where I live ) is puppymill capital of Canada, and to make matters worse, we have the worse laws in canada to protect these creatures

I agree there should be better laws for animals that is why I would never consider getting a dog from a pet store .

I don't know about laws being that much different anywhere rottielover, but THIS is a very key point:

"The rescue started with a tip to police from an area resident."

People really need to start taking notice, and reporting "suspicions". Unfortunatly, a lot of puppymills are out in the boonies, or don't have neighbours close-by.

In quebec we have very few animal laws, and most of the time never enforced. cruelty cases, slap on wrists. When these people do get caught, I can garuntee you, a very minimal fine will be dished out, like all the other ones that have been done. Last year alone, there was 3 puppymill seisures( I believe 3 ) and the people were fined minimal fines, and were told no more dogs for 4 years. LOL what a joke, so after 4 years they can start again in another area.
We have no lemon laws, do not know if the rest of canada is the same. For cars yes, 30days, not for dogs. Some of the danes have already been placed in foster homes. The spca Monteregies have been getting calls off the hook, there are so many people willing to help, which is nice to see. The rest of the dogs are being checked by the vet before heading into foster homes.

We need a need chair person to charge up from the SPCA, the guy in now is a money hungry jerk. Pleading for funds from other rescues to help him support his car payments. oops I mean his Spca.
There have been many tries here to strenghen the laws, to no prevail.
Adopt a rott would not adopt out to me because I live in quebec. Not because of distance, just because they know the truth about Quebec, and many of their dogs have been from here.
I do not blame them one bit.
Things need to be changed, fines, and penalties need to enhance. Jail time needs to be started.
This puppymill case is nothing compared to the fox terrier puppymill that was busted. and he pretty well got a slap on the wrist.

ALL of Canada is supposed to obey the Canada Animal Acts... but Quebec has never done what the rest of the country does. (No offense to Quebecers)
In Ontario animal laws are very strict, in addition to federal laws. They are also enforced, which I am very proud of.
Quebec doesn't enforce anything and therefore people gravitate there who want to be less than reputable when breeding dogs. It gets out of control and becomes a puppymill. It's sad... people need to speak up though. They need to write to their MP's and make noise. People turn a blind eye to it because they assume nothing can be done. If they would speak up, something would be done eventually.

This is such a sad but common situation. If only they could get new laws on the books and enough people to enforce them, this madness would soon be in the past.
