Unhappy 29 Greyhounds die from heat.

Last week when I was in Alabama I read about 29 greyhounds at the Victoryland Racetrack that died because of a heater malfuntion. I cannot understand why they are not required to have an attendant at all times for these poor dogs. Victoryland Racetrack is located in Tuskegee Alabama

This had just happened last week. They said that they were still investigating. I am going to keep an eye on the local paper online to see if they ever do anything. It is located in Macon Co. which is about the worse county in Alabama (as far as laws go). Which is most likely why they put the dog track in that county.

Well if it's what I think it is down there, then the "good-ol-boy"attictude will be hard to get thru.
How sad for those poor dogs, and I'll bet they won't have one person to shed a tear for them. They are viewed as just a money making tool!! I wish they could ban dog raceing. After they can no longer race, they have them shot. I've seen how they take them to a farm supposidly to live out their lives, but instead........they get shot and burried. The southern mentality is like nothing I've ever seen before anywhere else in the world.

This was a tragic accident. There have been many tears shed for these poor dogs...both by those in the adoption world and those in racing. There are monitoring systems and fire alarms...they are investigating how this happened. If you owned one of those dogs, trust me, you are going to want to know how this happened!

There are many boarding kennels and animal facilities - including vet's offices that don't have 24/7 staffing. There are also pets that die in home tragedies (like fires) all across this country. I know of greyhounds that died in a pet kennel due to equipment malfunction...no one clamored that we put an end to greyhound adoption. Sometimes crap just happens. You investigate, put changes in place and go on. The racing industry is probably regulated more than any other animal industry...MUCH more than show breeding kennels and especially moreso than any pet home.

I'm not saying Victoryland should or shouldn't be closed...I've personally never been to that track or it's racing kennels to be able to form an educated opinion on that. I DO hope that some good comes out of this (additional saftey measures in kennels, greyhound adoption awareness to name a couple)

the people who are responsible should be put in a tin shed and left there to feel what it is like to die from heat exhaustion.
What a pack of mongrels

So then any pet owners who's pets die in a house fire should be put in a box and set on fire? Or pet owners who's dogs get loose and hit by a car should be strapped to a road and run over?

If you are going to have standards, they should be consistent.

I agree that "crap happens". I would just think that they would be required to have someone on hand to look after these dogs, but I guess that would be in a perfect world. And we all know, it isn't. As for saying that it somehow to blame because of the Southern mentality, I find that somewhat offensive. Okay, not "somewhat"...outright offensive.
