Most popular dog, cat names
Most popular dog, cat names
By MARY CHALLENDER REGISTER STAFF WRITER February 4, 2007 1 Comment Now we know why Des Moines cat owners spend so much time out in their yards calling, "Here, kitty, kitty, kitty." It's the No. 1 name for cats in Des Moines, according to a database of 41,667 cats and dogs that have received rabies shots. At least dog owners are slightly more creative. The top name among Des Moines canines is Buddy. There are some Des Moines pet owners who buck the trend. Five cats are named Dog, Dogg or Doggy, while three dogs are named Kitty. The list also includes three dogs named Freeway, two named Nuisance, both cats and dogs named Felony, a feline Simon Peter, a canine Jesus and more than a few names - like one that ends with Head - that wouldn't be allowed on a license plate or in a family newspaper. The award for most creative would probably have to go to the spaniel named Shotgun Shell or the blue calico named Toaster Oven. Toaster Oven's name came from a hard-luck kittenhood, said owner Daniel Thrasher, who was given the cat by a friend. The original owner found the stray hiding in a toaster oven box, Thrasher said, so the name actually makes some sense. "We usually just call her Toaster," he said. "She'll come for pretty much anything - especially the can opener." |

I love those odd names too!
I once met a trick dog named 'Please'. It's owner called it that so it could say commands politely to it's dog - eg "Please, come here!", "Please, sit!" ![]() |

I love odd names. Working at a shelter, I get so sick of Max's and Harley's and Princess's and Shiloh and Blackie and Inky and Shadow and Bailey and Precious.
Yesterday, I named a stray cat Pinochle and a stray dog Bocce. |

Jesse is a very common name too (although most people have no clue that the male version is 'Jesse' and the female version is 'Jessie' and spell it 'Jessie' no matter the sex, which really irritates me).
Anyhoo..where was I? Oh yes...Jesse is a very common name, which is why I'm glad my boy is "jesse james" instead. However now days I'm after more creative names for my pets. I get sick of hearing the same names over and over again too (including 'Jesse'). Hmmm...that post was pretty pointless. Nevertheless, it means I'm one post closer to 6,000 posts, so it ain't all bad. ![]() Cass. |

LOL Cass - we'll all be supporting you to you're 6,000th post!!
One of the reasons we picked "River" as a name was because we thought it wasn't very common - turns out it's not that common here in Australia but seems to be a pretty popular name in Canada for some reason! |
