Canines compete for top dog
Lynsay Clutter/Eyewitness News
Indianapolis - The Indy Winter Classic Dog Show is the biggest in the Midwest, and it's under way at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The show attracts dogs and their owners from all over the country as they make their way to Westminster in New York. Washed and blow-dried, sprayed and snipped, these dogs are getting pampered, and they're loving it. "They've been here since 6 this morning, brushing all their dogs to get them ready for the ring by 11 o'clock," said Kevin Allen, show chairman. In the ring, it takes more than good looks to take the trophy. There's obedience, speed and control. "He likes to play a lot so I have to make sure that he doesn't play too rough in the ring or he doesn't try to jump away from me," said Jessica Arab, a young dog handler. "Each judge needs to know the standard for each breed and they are all different," said Allen. It's more pressure for handlers than dogs, but one trembling newcomer chihuahua seemed nervous. Retired show dog Ziggy was relaxing on his velvet pillow. It was just another day at the dog show for him. This event is not just for breeders and handlers. Any dog lover can come and get up close to more than 150 breeds, including a Bouvier Des Flanders named Max. "Kids just love seeing dogs, so it's a great thing for them, we'd like for them to come out," said Allen. It costs five dollars at the door to see more than 4,000 dogs strut their stuff through Sunday. Monday and Tuesday many of the dogs will go on to Westminster in New York, including a champion from Indianapolis. |
