After designing innovative products that HAVE advanced technology in the automotive, aviation and fitness navigation markets, the Olathe, Kansas, manufacturer of GPS gear has manufactured a state-of-the-art system for dogs and their owners.

Garmin recently unveiled its new GPS dog-tracking system, a two-piece wireless unit designed to allow hunters to keep up with their dogs.

The $650 gizmo is one of nine new products that was publicly unveiled by Garmin last month at the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Astro GPS Dog Tracking System was designed for high-performance sporting dogs, but could also have many practical uses.

"With the Astro, there's no wondering where your dog is or what he's doing," said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales.

The Astro includes a small GPS enabled device that mounts either on the dog's collar or harness, and a hand-held receiver for the owner.

The Astro receiver shows the dog's exact location on a compass display, along with details of its activity, such as whether the dog is stationary, running, or "treeing its quarry."

The system is able to track up to 10 dogs at once within a five mile radius.

Dog-tracking products have been on the market for some time, but most rely on less-accurate technology that simply directs owners in the general direction to find their dog.

Bartel said the Astro is a "one-of-a-kind device."
