Man Tips Canoe Into Icy Lake While Rescuing Dogs
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A man trying to help two dogs that wandered onto a partially frozen lake in Gloucester County on Sunday had to be pulled to safety himself by firefighters.
When Gary Kayser, 47, saw the Labrador retrievers -- who do not belong to him -- in Malaga Lake around 3:30 p.m., he got in his canoe and went toward them. He was able to rescue one dog before tipping over and the second dog got out on his own. Malaga Fire Company Chief Anthony Baldosaro said Kayser, who has a house near the lake, was taken to South Jersey Hospital-Elmer, where he was being treated for hypothermia. Doctors said they expected him to fully recover. |
