I have seen a couple of the episodes and I will readily admit I was quite impressed with him. I have no doubt the best is what ends up on TV but he definitely has an understanding of dogs in my opinion and knows how to reach them. I am actually sorry that I miss more episodes than I have seen.

i have seen several episodes of this show. he may very well be a good dog trainer, but i think a lot of the things on that tv show have been awfully dangerous. i think his glorified pit-bull-containing dog pack is very dangerous. all responsible pit bull owners will tell you that pit bulls should never be left alone together. it is in the pit bull temperament to fight with other dogs. you can't take that away.
maybe his dogs are all cold enough that it works, but what of uneducated joe shmoe who sees it on tv and thinks it will work for him? and some of those people he has on that show are absolute idiots. |

From what I've seen I think he is pretty good. I personally don't prefer his training methods but......he knows how to do it correctly. He just seems to use to much force sometimes. But I don't know....I heard somewhere that he used an alpha roll on this one dog, and ever since I heard that, my liking for him has went down some....

My sister (with eight dogs, one foster making that nine) and I were discussing him a few days ago. From what she said, he's a pretty good trainer and lives with fifty dogs that get along together. However, what she described of what he thinks walks should be (dog right next to you the entire time, no sniffing) I don't exactly agree with. I mean, come on, it's supposed to be fun for the dog. I don't know how much fun it is for a dog to just walk and not be able to figure out what that strong odor is.

Unleash The Possibilities

I was just at a seminar in his "back yard" (LA) with trainers who know him and his clients. I won't name names, and I won't say anything bad about him, but I will say that the trainers I was with were the ones that fixed the dogs for the clients after he had them.
His methods are...old fashioned. PS He doesn't travel with 50 dogs, but he does take a pack of pit bulls with him everywhere. He may have been working with these dogs at the time. They snarl and snap in the vehicle while he visits clients. Nice. |

Of course, as with any tv show, we only see the best ones. I'm sure he has just as many bad. But there is one thing I do agree with, and that's the "Alpha" status. After studying dog behavior, I find that establishing the pack leader role helps a great deal. Has anyone watched a pack of wolves? What we think is harsh is only natural behavior for them, and it works. Everyone knows their place.
I am by no means trying to start a heated debate over this, I think each dog and situation is unique and should be handled as such. I am just one of those people that trains using "pack rules". It works for me, but may not work for everyone/dog. I do like his show, though. |
