Divine Canine

Tonight on Animal Planet is the show Divine Canine (Monks of New Skete). Has anyone seen it? What are your thoughts on it?

I saw part of an episode over the weekend. I don't know if it was due to being really tired or the show, but I couldn't stay awake to watch the whole 30 minutes.

Right after Divine Canine is It's Me or the Dog. I've only seen the episode from You Tube so I'm looking forward to it.

I saw the ending of Divine Canine this week. I didnt really see enough to know if i like that style of training or not. It seemed good, though, lots of praising and the dog was giving them all her attention.

But i got to watch Its Me or the Dog for my first time. I loved it! Thats a lot how i am with my dogs, giving "the look". I also kind of use the same voice as her, i dont know how to explain it, its not really yelling, but its not my normal voice, either, i think its kind of a strict-sounding voice. Anyway, i really like her techniques, and how she kind of is "non-touch". Of course i still like Cesar, though, but i seem to relate to this girl's training techniques.

Animal planet is running It's me or the dog Monday nights at 8:30p here. It was interesting to me, boring for my hubby
This lady had 6 dogs that ran the household; ate icecream from the truck, tea everyday at a specific time, and got to do whatever they wanted. I'll have to watch more episodes before I can say whether I like it or not.

I haven't had a chance to watch Divine Canine yet (I have both episodes saved to watch later) but I really was interested in It's Me or the Dog. It's great to see a training show where they don't use collar pops and physical force on the dogs! I was shocked at the last episode, giving those dogs ice cream and tea every day !

Yeah, thats what i like about Its Me or the Dog, too. I have tried Cesar's way of jerking the leash up, but I have found that it doesnt really work for teaching a dog to Heel or anything. The only reason i would use the "leash pop" is for if the dog was being dangerous, but even then, there are techniques that might work better.

Throughout the episode i watched (2 Labs that were taking over the house), i dont think she touched the dogs once. The closest she came to touching them was just holding a leash or petting the dogs. If only i could do that (my dogs like to be really close to me).... Lol

the leash shouldn't be "jerked up" but gently to the side. And it's not a very hard pop, but enough to get the dogs attention. Like someone tapping your shoulder. The New Skete Monks (Divine Canine) plus many other trainers use & recommend leash pops.

If the dog was being dangerous I highly doubt a leash pop would work- it's a gentle correction.

I know. Im not at all against Cesar. Hes still a favorite dog trainer of mine. From what ive heard him say, though, it is up or to the side. Like with the shorter dogs ive seen him use mostly up, but sometimes with the bigger dogs ive seen him use to the side.

I think, like all other dog training methods, that the "leash pop/jerk" just isnt for all dogs. It works a little bit with Sophie, but the springers are way too eager to please, the slightest correction like a pop on the leash just breaks their heart (lol), and i dont know whats up with Wiener. Ive tried the "leash pop" on him, but either he doesnt feel it due to having a thick neck, or he just ignores it.

But, with my dogs, i have found that treats work just as good as anything else (my piggy dogs, lol).

So, I finally watched it last night...

It was the perfect episode for me to watch... though my mom DID ask why I was even watching it *grin*

So, one of the monks got a bulldog that jumped on people then humped them. He started with a nylon choke... constantly zig zagging... no improvement or care from the dog. He gives the "breed excuse" that I CERTAINLY wasn't expecting. Then he moves onto that plastic prong thing... thinks he can jerk on it... dog reacts when jerked but goes back to doing his own thing (couldn't tell for sure but seemed to be exhibiting avoidance due to stress). Finally, the owner is there and the dog is on a metal prong. Owner exclaims something like "oh, he's so GREAT!" yeah, well the monk is doing power steering, dog had no choice if he wanted to avoid the prong. Almost constant tension...

At least I got some anger out... hah, and it was amusing to me!

Power steering... never thought I'd see something that explained that SO well.
