One Mans Opinion- Pit Bull Ban

Read this on another forum..

Thunder Bay,Ontario, Canada -- The State of New Mexico has just climbed aboard the Pit Bull Ban Wagon and all Ontario dog owners had better listen up.

New Mexicos Bill S188 will not only place severe restrictions on ownership and acquisition of pit bulls which they choose to define as a, Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier or (and I continue to quote from the bill) or dog identifiable as or known as a Pit Bull, whatever the heck that means. The law states, no one can acquire a pit bull after July 1st of this year. As for present owners the law covers breeding (they cant), spaying and neutering (they must). Licensing, its $250 a year. If that breed is found at large its an automatic $1,000 fine. And theres much more. But, in addition the bill automatically declares the following breeds dangerous and subjects them to additional fines and restrictions. Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American or Old Country Bull dog, Presa Canario, Chow Chow, Doberman, German Shepherd, Great Dane, Rottweiler, Siberian Husky and Wolf hybrids.

Kris Brown of Dorion writes an open letter that appears under the heading

Whats Next a ban for every dog that bites? Good question Mr. Brown.

Geez! Why not just ban all dogs! Blanket statements and laws like this just make me soooooo MAD! When will people learn that it is not the breed?

I personally dont think they will learn. They have nothing else to blame it on. They wouldnt want to blame it on "their kind", so they blame it on the thing they THINK is the problem. And the dog isnt the problem. Its people.

I'm not a huge pitbull fan...just cause I'm not. But I think it's stupid to accuse all dogs of any breed to be vicious! It's basicaly racism if you will. To make stereotypical statements about white, black, asian, indian, etc, people is wrong...same with dogs! Sure I've known a couple nasty chows and pits...but I've also known nasty mutts, and far many other breeds. Bottom line is:

STUPID PEOPLE MAKE BAD DOGS!

If STUPID people train their dogs to attack...that's what the dogs will do!!! Dogs aim to please for the most part! If their "master" teaches them to attack people or other dogs....or if the "master" hits their dog and teaches him the "flight or FIGHT" response...bad things will happen!! I'm more worried about the nasty little scottie that lives on our corner...getting loose and biting my ankles! :shiver: hehe!

I'm scared of Poodles.. Chihuahua's, and other small breeds.. Not larger breeds.

stupid thing is...people who do fight pitbulls...laws wont stop them. They are the same people that own illegal firearms and deal drugs...you think they give a hoot about laws and legalities? HA! All these stupid laws do is stop the GOOD dog owners from having these specific breeds...that's all it does!

It makes me mad too. Dogs don't need to be banned. Irresponsible owners/breeders need to be banned.

Any large, muscular dog can be dangerous.. So it'd only be fair to ban them all.
What about guide dogs, then? Police dogs? It just won't work imo.

Yeah. And also.. Little Dogs can be dangerous to kids. Chihuahua's.. Man they are so aggresive.. th only non- aggresive one I have ever met is Tink. I'm sure their are more like her.. But most are nippy.

southern, that is the same mentality that people have with pitbulls, and the reason they are being banned and restricted. If someone has only met/heard of aggressive pit bulls, they are going to fear them, even though not all of them are aggressive. The same goes with Chis. You've met a sweet one, but you still say the breed is aggressive. So, the same would apply to pit bulls, which you say is so wrong.
So, if most chihuahuas are nippy, are most pit bulls aggressive?
Sorry, I just had to stick up for the Chis.

I love the breed and I don't like to see chis passed off as 'nasty little dogs'. lol.

Rip, I own a Chi... And I own a Pit. I'm not saying all Chi's are nippy just like I'm saying all Pits are not aggresive. Some are some arent.
