Schwarzenegger Wants Strays Killed Faster

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to repeal a state law that requires animal shelters to hold stray dogs and cats for up to six days before killing them.

Instead, there would be a three-day requirement for strays. Other animals, including birds, hamsters, potbellied pigs, rabbits, snakes and turtles, could be killed immediately.

Schwarzenegger has told the state Legislature that the changes could save local governments that operate shelters up to $14 million.
An estimated 600,000 dogs and cats are put to death each year in California, including 34,000 in Los Angeles alone.

The waiting period has caused overcrowding and forced some shelters to kill off animals simply to make room for new ones, said H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the state Department of Finance.

"Because of space limitations, the shelters are being forced to euthanize animals who are otherwise highly adoptable immediately after the holding time," Palmer said.

Despite Schwarzenegger's huge popularity, some political observers think the proposal will meet stiff resistance.

"There is no organized constituency of cats and dogs, but certainly the pet owners of America will find this reprehensible," said Barbara O'Connor, director of the Institute for the Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento.

"Cats and dogs are like mom and apple pie," she said. "Don't mess with the pets. Most people prefer them to other people."

The 1998 law is named for former state Sen. Tom Hayden, who said the governor's proposal "will inflict heartbreak on a lot of owners and people in the animal adoption world."

Well, as big a dog lover as I am, 3 days is normal in my area. I feel for the people of California having to face this issue. I do hope that it becomes a large scale media event, so it brings this issue to the forefront and can be dealt with.

That's just a horrible statistic, 1 every minute.
Maybe they should start thinking about the cause and not just trying to hide the problem in the closet by getting rid of the animals.
I understand that stray dogs and cats are a big problem, but they should really give people a chance to find their lost pets.
Anybody that hasn't done it yet get your pets microchip or tattooed so this won't happen to them.

8,000,000 dogs and cats are killed each year in the USA alone, which is one every 25 seconds.

Also, each day, 10,000 people are born in the US, any guesses to how many cats and dogs are born in the US each day? 70,000 each day.

Oh lord.... 1 per minute...

The way I view it, the best way to deal with over-population is to spay and neuter. And more and more, when I look at my un-neutered dog when typing that, I feel like a hypocrite. I'm leaning towards neutering Ripley, just because, knowing those statistics, there would be so much more satisfaction in rescuing.

I really am not logical here, just thought I'd let you know... But why not, instead, hugely promote spay and neutering? All the money spent on the promotions would not NEARLY equal the amount of money spent on euthanasia solution, and if SOME of the people are like me, and feel guilty having a dog that could possibly add to the amount of dogs in shelters, it'd be quite successful.

Well, its a good idea, but realize that the majority of stray pets that are killed are pets that reproduced on the street. Promoting getting your pet fixed is only targetting a small portion of the problem. I would like to see a movement from killing pets because they can't be adopted to building low maintenence, long term shelters. The cost of killing animals, and the buildings they do it in are very expensive. I would rather spend that money in a campaign to fix your pet, and adopt rather than buy.

Can anyone say "Have your pet spayed or nuetered"? I cant stress how much people need to do this, if only to stop so many animals being killed.

I love the old gameshows... reality TV is really just too idiotic to endure. Nothing beats listening to Price is Right and doing my Quantum Physics Homework!

Man, i wish they taught it in high school! I had to take private lessons during luch with my science teacher.

Yep, ol' college. UAA (University of Alaska Anchorage). Thye apparently have a QP program, but it isnt available o the public, and you ahve to have reccomends from 20 teachers. But man, its a sweet sweet class. BTW, im taking Theory, not practical, so don't bombard me with math questions. i hat math.

Quantum Leap was on of my favorite shows.
