Guiness Record and Prison Puppies
Lacrosse, Wisconsin's local Human Society held a "Bark in the Park" for pooches. With quite a few dogs, they set a new world record for the loudest barking.
In New York, inmates are raising guide dog puppies and bomb detection puppies. They spend the week days dedicating every hour to training and taking care of their dog, which includes writing essays and various classes. On the weekeneds other fosters socialize the puppies. All inmates that have taken care of a puppy and been released (a few dozen) have stayed out of trouble. |

I have seen a few shows in the past on Animal Planet that was called "Prison Dogs" I think. Some were where they were taking "unadoptable" shelter dogs & doing socialization & obedience training and then having adoption days (with appropriate screening of the would-be adopters); another was where they actually took in pets of people who were having trouble training them, doing the training and then the dogs went back to their owners; and another where they were training service dogs to in obed. & how to turn on lights, open doors, etc. I think more prisons should have these types of programs. I think it would be a win-win situation. The dogs definitely win as a well-trained dog is a happier dog & it gives the inmates a purpose as well as unconditional love and a living creature that they are responsible for.

I agree it is a great idea to place animals in the prison system. I especially liked the one on AP about the dogs deemed unadoptable who were given a second chance.
Geez I wish I could have taken Sunny to the dog bark. She would have definitly made it louder! LOL |

Have you seen the one where the inmates were training seizure dogs, one of the inmates was epileptic and the dog was trained to assist during the seizures. The inmate cried so hard when she had to place her, but then she started on another one right away. So sad...
And I saw one about a yellow lab that kept escaping his home to go play basketball with the Huber (work-release) inmates at the county jail. The family moved across town, and he still kept doing it, daily sometimes, until the family actually adopted the dog out to the jail. |
