When you are away, or leaving for a little bit, do you leave the TV on for your dog?
And if so, what channel? From my experiences with dogs I've found out they think CNN is boring, and Animal Planet can stress them out..(all the surgery shows and stuff lol). I'm just curious, I think this something I will do for my puppy so he doesn't get too lonely. |

Talk radio...I'm not convinced that dogs can actually see the TV, as it is 2-dimensional...but the can certaintly hear it. Talk radio is known for calming puppies down, and I am sure it would be the same for dogs.

I wouldn't allow my dogs to watch CNN! All liberal and all one sided. LOL!
I'm positive the dogs can see TV. Anytime I'm watching Animal Plannet or anything else with animals of any kind, my Chi, Jose, starts growling and/or barking. I have to keep reminding him (we have long heart to hearts about this) that it's only telivision and he doesn't have to worry. Lots of times Lyric will sit up straight as an arrow and watch. One time he saw some dogs or horses (I forget) and went right up in front of the TV...watched, then went and tried to go behind the TV. LOL. Poor baby...that was a real head scratcher. Sometimes I leave the TV on and sometimes I just put some classical music on for them. They like that, especially Chopin with the piano or Bach. Another soothing thing is Smetana's, Die Moldau...absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Carrie |

hmm...my dog usually doesn't even acknowledge the TV. He never looks at it and only ocassionally will bark if he hears a dog bark on it. Although if there is any mussy stuff on the television he does bury his head in the sofa or try covering his eyes. I don't know if thats a coincidence or not.

For the most part, Bimmer ignores the TV. Kharma will watch if something catches her eye, but she's more interested in stealing the remotes than watching the TV. But Shiva . . . Shiva loves to lay on the couch with her head propped up on the arm so she can watch TV. She'll watch almost anything with complete absorption and rapt attention, especially if there's a car chase, but she has a real antipathy to Katie Couric. Couric is the first thing Shiva ever growled at, and Shiva still grumbles at her if she's inside while the Today show is on. She wags her tail when Matt or Anne are on screen, and will perk her ears up for Al Roker, but she really, really doesn't like Katie Couric.

I leave the weather channel on for Bailey. I have been doing this since the day i brought her home. I have to leave her up to 12 hours sometimes for work and I think it helps her with being lonely.
I know she can see the t.v. She goes nuts when we watch home movies and she sees herself on the tele. The other night we were watching our camping trip and she saw herself squeaking her red ball. She ran over to her toy basket and grabbed her red ball and started squeaking it at the t.v. Then she saw herself with her green frog and she had to run around the house and search for green frog and brought it infront of the t.v. too. It was very funny. |

Quincy Wisdom, in my experience, dogs CAN see objects in the TV if they look for them. When I inherited my Grandpa's miniature schnauzer after he died, she was trained to look at the television when someone said "What's on TV, Sam?". Sometimes she would go up to the television, when it was on mute, and just watch it. I used to (and still do) watch animal planet a lot, and every time she would see a dog or cat, she would lunge and scratch at the screen. Now, it was on mute. No noises, or anything... I think that dog actually did watch TV. I don't think they absorb what they see, but Sam was trained to keep an eye out for other animals, and apparently she saw them in the television.
Buster and Ripley don't care about the TV. Ripley barks if he hears a doorbell similar to ours on TV, but he never looks at it. |
