Council charges owner for dead dog

Council charges owner for dead dog

A Queensland man was slugged with a $150 fine by his local council for not paying registration fees for his dead dog.

When Wombey the Blue Heeler finally went to the big dog kennel in the sky 12 months ago, his owner, Greg Ott, took the death certificate to Logan City Council, where it was stamped. Mr Ott then received a stream of registration renewal slips for $17 in the post before being issued with the fine.

The bureaucratic bungle hasn't helped Mr Ott move on.
"It's been twelve months now, I've been trying to get him out of my system and I get this stuff (the fine) thrown at me in the mail — that's what I'm complaining about."

Mr Ott eventually took his dog's ashes to the council to sort out the matter. "All I can do is apologise for that," said one council worker, who has since wiped the fine.

I know how horrible this situation can be, poor guy! When Ringo passed away, the RSPCA kept sending us letters to bring him in for his next vaccines. It was hard to deal with his death because it was so sudden, and I never got to say goodbye to him.
