Rise of the Dog

This sunday on PBS there's a two part series on the dogs. The first is about the history from wolf to domestic dog, and the second part is next sunday Dogs by design.

here's a link Nature | PBS

showtime is 7 my time anyway, you'll have to check on yours. I'm pretty excited to see what they have to say.

anybody watch it? I think it has a repeat airing on Tuesday night

I thought it had some interesting points, but it was pretty basic. I guess how much can you fit into an hour show?

Part II is next sunday.

I don't see it on our schedule. I checked here: Nature . TV Schedule | PBS

I'm going to check TiVo now, maybe we don't get to see it here yet.....

My listings:

Local PBS is not airing this one, they are showing the cow ones

The PBS station on Direct TV (Channel 300-something) is where is was. I missed it but they are re-running them on the weekend so I can catch up....I set it to record.

I saw this on another channel. Don't know exactly which one but am guessing the descovery channel. I wasn't aware there would be two parts to it. Now I must go check on this.

I won't be watching Part II this sunday. Packers vs Giants takes precedence. I'll have to see if I can catch it on Tuesday night when they replay it.

OK, I caught up.

Comments on Part 1 - Here are some of my thoughts

I thought it was great for general public although I was left wanting more. It was not too technical, cross cultural and they used wonderful film footage of dogs and their people. I loved the overview of modern primitive cultures, they showed how the people "connect" with and respect their dogs. I loved the part about Papua New Guinea's dogs, it was great to see them move and hunt.

I liked how they explained the selection process for tameness and the use of the fox farm data to explain how humans breeding for domestication purposed is a powerful evolutionary pressure and it only take a few generations. I don't think Darwin had domestication in mind when he wrote about natural evolution and selective pressures on populations.

The footage of the dogs was wonderful! How about those junkyard dogs? I just had to giggle at the one rolling in the trash, now that's a dog! How about the swimming border collie. Seeing the coated Xolos tugged at my heart, it really reminds me of our Monty.

I was a little disappointed that they only used wolf as the wild canine. I hoped they would have covered the dingo and other wild canines. Oh well, as you said it's only an hour

I look forward to Part 2

I agree, it was a bit basic BUT it was way more information than most films for the general public. I think it's be great for older kids and most people, but if you have any training or expanded knowledge of the origin of the dog, it's too basic but the film footage makes up for that.

This is one program where 1 hour seemed short, I was left unsatisfied and trying to find more info on certain topics.

What do you think about the experts used?
