DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Watching a dog fight would be a felony crime under a bill discussed Thursday by a House panel.

Jim Lykam, D-Davenport, said the number of such events could drop if spectators knew they faced stiffer punishment.

"I think these spectators, if they're not there (at the fights) to gamble on them, then it makes it harder to have these events," he said.

The bill, discussed during a subcommittee meeting of the House Public Safety Committee, would also cover cock fighting.

Excellent idea!!!

As long as the punishment is actually a deterrent. If they can make 10 grand on a fight, a $200 fine won't keep too many away.

Puleeze.

The single largest reason why dog fighters aren't prosocuted is because the fights are so hard to find!

Dog fighting goes hand in hand with illegal gambling, illegal guns and illegal drugs. If law enforcement could find the fights they would not have any problem finding things to charge onlookers with.

How about making it easier to prococute the dog owners who fight their dogs? Most places require that they must actually be caught in the act of fighting their dogs.

Right now it's a lesser crime in Iowa, but you're right Lilac, if you cannot find the gatherings you cannot prosecute.
