US News, California - 2 Pitts kill Chihuahua at Long Beach's Belmont Shore dog beach

Press-Telegram - Council considers new rules for dogs

This incident was accidentally caught on tape as 2 Pitts attacked a Chihuahua at Long Beach's Belmont Shore dog beach. The Chihuahua died on the way to the vet. The woman with the Pitts fled the scene with the dogs and has not been identified.

Quote:
She placed the video on the Web site YouTube in hopes that someone would identify the pit bulls.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the attack is asked to contact at 562-570-3066.
Here is one of the Videos on YouTube, it does not include the attack, the attack is on a different video. Watching the videos will give you an idea of what the dogs were doing just before the attack. There is more information about the woman and dogs involved on their YouTube Channel HERE

Quote:
Schipske has proposed several elements from The Coalition for Living Safely with Dogs in the state of Colorado, which she said could be considered as a model for Long Beach's City Municipal Code.
As I was reading about this story, it reminds me of all the jerks out there that take dog aggressive dogs to dog parks "for fun." I'm not saying this woman with the 2 Pitts was looking for an attack or trouble, but it is a possibility. More responsible owners need to speak up and shed some light on this story. Right now we can only wonder what the dog's history is and what the woman's intentions were. We need to know the whole story, was the Chihuahua a trouble maker or were the Pitts trouble makers? Who knows, I hope more people speak out about ALL dogs involved.

When I lived in Davis, my Rottie Lab mix (loving, playful, not pushy) was attacked by 2 blue ACDs who had a history of attacking dogs as they play frisbee. She was also attacked by a large GSD who also had a history of lurking at the park to attack dogs on a regular basis, the owner actually encouraged it. We all reported these attacks to authorities to no avail. We just had to leave the park when these individuals were there or they were going to close the park to dogs altogether, it was too much trouble to protect the responsible owners. We need a way to weed these trouble makers out of the public dog park scene or we are going to lose all our dog parks and beaches. It's not the dog's fault, the dogs did not drive to the park, it's those darn owners who are not taking responsibility.

Maybe some serious pepper spray in the aggressive dogs eyes may stop these people from letting their dogs cause problems.

That is why I dislike off leash places. Too many people have too many ill behaved dogs that are running around offleash.

If there was a way to regulate who could get into an offleash beach/dog park/trail/whatever, that would be wonderful. Nothing breed discriminate, but perhaps training discriminate...

I doubt BSL will result, but they will make the dangerous dog (aka vicious dog) law more strict which is good and not so good. One of my dogs was put on a dangerous dog list because she defended herself against another dog biting her and a human hand got in the way, total human error not the dogs fault.

IMO more behavior evaluations need to be used in cases of dangerous dogs and a better program for reporting trouble makers would help too. In the age of cell phone cameras and videos, you'd think they would have a blog or website to report trouble makers to law enforcement just like "breaking news" for news stations.

Maybe we will see profiles of "dangerous" dogs and owners at trail heads, park entrances and other public areas like we see sexual predators and violent offenders.
