I'll wait and see before I decide if I'm excited or not. She better talk about petshops and their relationship with puppymills. I hope she also talks about backyard breeders. Although considering the fact that she bought her GRs from a disreputable breeder and was happy to advertise the fact on her own show, I won't hold my breath.

Oprah dedicates puppy-mills show to her dog
Her cocker spaniel, Sophie, died last month from kidney failure updated 9:32 p.m. ET, Tues., April. 1, 2008 CHICAGO - Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate a show investigating abuses at puppy mills to her cocker spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure. “Sophie gave me 13 years of unconditional love. She was a true love in my life,” Winfrey says on the broadcast scheduled to air Friday. (Advance remarks from the show were released Tuesday by Harpo Productions.) The show features special correspondent Lisa Ling investigating puppy mills, which Ling calls “horrific” and “haunting.” Winfrey says the show is “for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment.” While Sophie was not a product of a puppy mill, and Winfrey’s three current dogs were adopted from breeders, Winfrey says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter. “I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show,” she says. |

Oprah on puppymills
Oprah's show today is going to be on Puppymills be sure to watch it. Hopefully she gets the word out and people stop buying pet store puppies. I know she has lots of pull with society.

It was a great show, I cried!!!
The covered puppymills, also a message the akc wrote talked briefly about getting dogs from good breeders, talked about rescuing dogs, and s/n your pets. But mainly the message got across about pet store puppies coming from puppymills. And alot about rescuing dogs from shetlers and BRIEFLY how to find a GOOD breeder, that they make you sign a contract and will always take a puppy back. This still might get people to go to bybs, but its a step up from supporting puppymills. But she was really big on shetler dogs and how you can get purebreeds (if your really set on getting one) you can get one from a shetler, because 1/3rd of the dogs in shetlers are purebreeds and how they have certain purebreed rescues and you can get a dog any age (puppies too, if your really set on a puppy). She should of advertised petfinder, but hopefully she mentions it on her site. They showed dogs at shetlers beinging pts , because of the overpopulation, and how the elderly & sick are usually the ones who are put to sleep, very sad, but it makes people think twice before they go purchase a puppy or adopt a puppy. |

It was a really good show! The man that was on the show knew that oprah could get through to lots of people so he got a billboard that he thought oprah might see and she did she saw it on the way to work and it said something like "Oprah-please do a show on puppymills the dogs need you" She actually saw it and did a show on it right after that. It showed dogs in puppymills and how they are treated, it showed dog auctions, and it showed the man who was on the show's dog Shrimp who he rescued from a puppymill he was a maltese poodle mix and bald. They brought him on stage and he was fluffy again. The man who was on the show ran a rescue which mostly adopted out puppymill dogs that the local puppymills would give him if they were sick or couldn't be bred anymore. He said some of the puppymill owners would call and tell him he had 45 minutes to come get some dogs or they would be shot that day. It was a really sad show and I bawled my eyes out most of it. I was so happy when oprah said "I am a changed woman, I have always gotten dogs from other sources and I will never buy from a breeder again but rescue shelter dogs"

America's "dirty little secret" for sure, great show but too short. That's probably the best $10,000 a rescue ever spent on advertising and community education, just genius.
I'm glad they were graphic, people need to see what goes on. We can plug the rescue, it was Main Line Animal Rescue Here's an article on their website you might like to read. Our Oprah Billboard is now up on the Kennedy Expressway Quote:

This was on Oprah's site
![]() Recognize a Good Breeder When choosing a breeder look for one who does the following: Ideally, keeps his or her pets as part of the family. Encourages you to meet and spend time with your puppy's parents, and allows you to see where they spend most of their time. Area is clean and well maintained. Insists on meeting potential adoptive families. Will not sell their dogs to just anyone. Doesn't sell animals too young—sells puppies only after they are 8 to 12 weeks old, and 8 to 10 weeks old for kittens. Can provide references from other families who have purchased puppies. Keeps breeding dogs healthy, well fed, and well socialized. Provides professional veterinary care for all their animals. Performs health tests on fathers and mothers prior to breeding to ensure their puppies do not have genetic defects. Has a good relationship with a local veterinarian and can show you records of visits for the puppy. Bases breeding frequency on mother's health, age, condition and recuperative abilities. Does not breed extremely young or old animals. Discusses positive and negative aspects of particular animals and breeds with potential owners. Encourages multiple visits to meet the puppy. Will take back any of their animals, at any time and for any reason. |

I didn't see it, but I'm glad she aired it! Just today two of my friends, who originally were thinking about buying from a petstore, now want nothing to do with them after they saw Oprah's show.
Actually, scratch that, I just watched it on the link that Candy posted. I was in tears. I can't even begin to fathom having a dog that never once stepped its foot onto grass. I can't even begin to fathom how that is legal, treating them like livestock or not. Any kind of law, this goes for cows, chickens, and all of our other "food" animals, that allows an animal to be cramped in a cage 24/7, coated in urine and feces, and never getting proper veteraniary care is...insane. |
