Game Wardens Urge Pet Owners To Keep Their Dogs From Attacking Deer

The Maine Warden Service says it has received reports of a number of deer being killed or injured in confrontations with dogs.

Game wardens are asking pet owners to keep their dogs on a leash and away from deer that are coming out of the woods in search of food.

Wardens say deer throughout the state are seeking food near roadways and in neighborhoods, but are often too weak to run away or put up a fight.

"People who let their dogs at large and they're chasing deer aren't helping at all. They're weak to begin with and it's pretty easy for a dog this time of year especially with the deer falling through still the deep snow in the woods and most dogs and coyotes can run on top of the snow. It doesn't take much for them to bring a deer down", said Warden Alan Fuller.

Pet owners can face a fine of up to 500 dollars if their dog gets away from them and kills a deer.
