Dogs will have a permanent place to play along Hollywood Beach, thanks to a vote Wednesday by the Hollywood City Commission.

After testing the idea for eight months, commissioners decided to make the temporary dog beach between Pershing and Custer streets a permanent part of the city's shoreline as of May 1.

Chuck Ellis, director of the city's Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department, said he had heard few complaints about the dog beach -- and no one spoke against the idea Wednesday.

''I'm certainly very happy that we decided to give this a shot,'' Mayor Peter Bober said. ``It's just been really successful.''

After commissioners take a final vote later this month, Hollywood will join Fort Lauderdale as one of the only Broward cities with a dog beach. The Hollywood dog beach will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to visitors who pay for a city pass.
