Texas Vet - Vaccination letter - 2002

I was doing research on immune response to rabies vaccination and my search resulted in a formal complaint about vaccinations schedules and law requirements for annual rabies vaccination by a Texas vet in 2002. It's old but a great collection of information, references and such.

Dear Ms Pearson,

My complaint, filed with this Office of the Attorney General of Texas, and the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, alleges fraud and theft by deception on the part of the Veterinarians of Texas in the marketing of vaccines for dogs and cats.

The following is a brief review of pertinent literature I submit to support my complaint.

The duration of immunity for Rabies vaccine, Canine distemper vaccine, Canine Parvovirus vaccine, Feline Panleukopenia vaccine, Feline Rhinotracheitis, feline Calicivirus, have all been demonstrated to be a minimum of 7 years by serology and challenge studies.

In Georgia it's a law to get Rabies vaccines every year. I'm not sure I like that...

My 16 year old Chihuahua never had a Rabies shot, and she did not have any shots after her near death from her first puppy shot. I didn't fly with her and she never went to dog parks, therefore I was never ask to prove her shots.
The three Yorkies I have now have all had their initial shots and I will not be getting them anymore unless the titer test shows they need something, but I won't even be getting the titer test until they are 4 years old. (that's 3 years after their final shots were given).

Here's what I've found so far:

Texas State Regulation currently requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated every year with a vaccine that is licensed by the USDA for 3 years duration of immunity. Alternatively, in order to prevent injection site fibrosarcomas, (a fatal type of cancer caused by vaccines) cats can be vaccinated with a non-adjuvanted rabies vaccine licensed for one year.

Texas Department of State Health Services, Infectious Disease Control Unit > Vaccine

The state of Texas requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age and on a 1-year or 3-year basis thereafter depending on the vaccine used.* Additionally, when traveling with a dog or cat, have in your possession a rabies vaccination certificate that was signed by a veterinarian. Check with your veterinarian about other vaccines that are available for a wide range of diseases.

All dogs and cats over 3 months of age that are being transported into Texas must have been vaccinated against rabies within the last 12 or 36 months depending on the vaccine used.*

* All dogs and cats must receive a second rabies vaccination within one year of receiving their first vaccination, regardless of the type of vaccine used or the age at which the animal was initially vaccinated.
