A Loss for Pits
Yesterday a pit was shot here in Southern Oklahoma by a police officer--the dog was straying around in these people's yard, police were called and the dog was shot in the head. Now there are 2 towns that are going for BSL because the pits that are bred now are much more people aggressive than in the past. The towns by the way are Ardmore and Atoka Okla.

I was also wondering what else it was doing.
Did it threaten anyone? Perhaps the police? I can't imagine the police just shooting it for no reason, however that's not to say that it didn't happen. Where were the owners? Why was it not kept confined to the backyard? Any dog that is left to wander can be seen as a threat by people, regardless of the size or breed(although, yes...sadly APBTs get the worst of it). I guess I'd just like to know more before I feel negatively towards anyone. Cass. |

The blip on the news didn't go into detail but then you have to realize I live in "good ole boy" country. I have the local news on now trying to see if they say anything else--it's 7:30 am here. It could have been the people looked out their door and SAW a loose pit--called the PD--reason enough to shoot it. My question is why was animal control not called? Why the PD? But back to the good ole boy mentality......... Minta

Wow! How sad for the pittie. But like everyone else I wonder what the pup was doing if anything. It just makes you wonder what people think. I see dogs all the time and try to rescue and return as many as I can but I have never been tempted to call Animal Control. I guess that would change pretty quick if I thought the dog was in grave danger or if it was going after someone.

I talked to a pittie owner who lives near Ardmore, where the dog was shot and she said the dog was laying on the porch when the PD arrived and it growled at them so they shot it. About the other town where they are planning a ban I have the article from the online paper but I don't know how to get it here. Their reason for the proposed ban is they are tired of people letting their dogs run loose. Excuse me? Id that a reason for a breed ban? Minta

That's so horrible, just because people aren't keeping them on leashes. I would start fining people, or picking the dogs up and then taking them to the pound, and have a fee charged to them for having their dog offleash. I bet that is just an excuse to get a ban going.

What is wrong with people these days? Starting a breed ban just because there are offleash dogs and shooting a dog just because it growled at you?
You have to wonder if the offleash dogs where all Beagles and the dog that growled was a Labrador if they'd be doing this. I'm sick of all of this crap about PitBulls. I think the BSL stands for Bull Crap (put the swear word here ) Laws. UGH. ![]() |

When they had the article on TV about Atoka--where they are going to ban the dogs because they run loose--there was a lady with maybe 3 pits on chains and they were very healthy looking--she had one in her arms and was crying saying she raised it from birth and what was she supposed to do? They couldn't afford to move. That was so sad to me--that is when the officer came on the screen and said they were being bred more aggresively etc etc. It is absolutely stupid and Icey Blue Sibes I believe you are exactly right--just a reason to get a breed ban going.
