I hate to say it, but although they are undoubtedly well meaning, it's not difficult to tell when a dog belongs to someone, with or without vaccination records. It sounds like this organization is so caught up in rules and dogma (if you'll pardon the use of the word) that they've become blinded to the big picture.

That group has ticked off a whole lot of people. I think it's cruel playing with that family's emotions like that. Instead of focusing on the dogs that ARE homeless and needing help, they are hanging on to a dog that has had a home, and still has a home if they would just give the poor thing back to the people it knows and loves.

I sent them a lovely email LOL Gave that group my .02.

I know this is an old post, but I saw an article about this in Dog Fancy. If you haven't done everything you can and things like that, there's a good chance the person who has found your dog can keep it.

Here's another article about it.

http://www.wsls.com/servlet/Satellit...=1031778356488

Obviously the lady LOVES her dog but can't (or won't) give him what he really needs. The article states that two dogs before Coby ran away and weren't ever seen again, and she hasn't provided veterinary treatment when she should have been.

I think the dog may have been better off finding a home who could pay for his care, and has a fenced in yard, reading about the lady's track record with this current dog and past dogs. But, all the info wasn't in the articles so who am I to say?

Maybe this will be her wake up call! She may love her dog but she needs to provide a safe place for him to live. I will keep my fingers crossed that everything works out for her and her pup.

If they had a fence in the first place, maybe he wouldn't have gone missing.

Can you blame the shelter for requiring proof of ownership? Anyone could say that was their dog. Plus they have cared for him. She would have paid more than 75 bucks at a kennel

Yeah I think they let her off a little too easy.... All that because SHE couldn't provide proof that she had ever even SEEN the dog. I would gladly pay $75 to get my dogs back (scrounge up change from strangers if I have to) and thank the people for taking care of him/her, especially if I have had a history of not watching my dogs close enough to not give them a chance to run away. I wonder exactly how many dogs that woman has had that has run away... So I don't think it's wrong for the shelter to ask her to have a fenced in yard since this dog plus a couple others (that they know of, and haven't been found) have ran away.

Also, she should be MORE than grateful her baby didn't end up hit by a car, get a disease from wandering with no vaccinations (my guess, since she didn't have proof not even from vet that she vaccinated her dog), or got picked up by the pound and eventually put to sleep. She is more than lucky she was even able to get the dog back.

Mind you, I would fight to get my dogs back like she did, but I make sure they are up to date on vaccinations, on leash while outside, or if not, in a secure area and under my control, and have tags on their collars, which are on them at all times while outside or out of kennel. I don't have a fenced in yard, but I do train with them to come when called... a necessity for me and my dogs.

I totally agree with the shelter. Anybody could walk in there, and say, "hey, look, it's Spot!", and walk out of the shelter with their new pet dog, and without the $75 fee.

She can't provide proof of ownership??? What, she never took Coby to the vet? Even a picture would be proof of ownership, and the shelter could call the lady's vet, and get the records from them. The vet's office won't release records, without the owner's permission, so, if they can't get records from the vet, Coby was never there.

If I found someone's dog, I wouldn't give it back, either, without proof of ownership. If I found the dog, then the dog would my responsibility, and I would have to check out the family's home and everything, before letting them have the dog back. TheGOOCH is right, if she had a fence, she'd probably still have her dog.

It's sad that the little girl is upset that she can't have her dog back, but it's not the shelter's fault; it's mommy's fault.

Moral of this story? Always keep your records, and always watch your dogs . Heck, every dog gets out once in a while; Shelby squeezes under the fence when she's bored, and I freak out, till she hears my frantic calling, and comes back. But, I would pay $75 to get her back, and be happy to provide proof of ownership.

It's not the shelter's fault that the lady doesn't have records for her dog.

I agree, and yes, there was an article in Dog Fancy about it. But again, you have to have PROOF of ownership. If she doesn't have that, the courts won't help her. And again, it sounds to me like she doesn't deserve to have a dog at all if she can't take proper care of him.

Just my 2 cents.

Pugs, what if one of your babies got out, and ended up in a shelter, only to have some stranger walk in and say, "hey, that's my dog!"??? How would you feel, if that shelter just took the person's word for it, and gave your little one away?? That is why they are requiring proof of ownership; to protect both the dog and the family. It's not the shelter's fault that this lady can't even prove it's her dog.

And, heck, this is just my own 2 cents, but the dog needs to be found another home, and taken out of that shelter. Who knows how long he'll be stuck there, because this woman can't prove Coby's her dog .

I agree with the shelter.......if this had happened to Kyaio I would bring in her pictures, her vet bills, her certifs AND, have them scan her chip. I think the microchip is invaluable if you love your dog. And if you have the chip registered there is no dispute at all. I have Ky's registered in 3 places.

One of my friends is a Pit lover, when he got the puppy spayed he had the inside of her leg shaved and his social security number tattooed on her thighe, another great idea. Likewise, he has her portrait tatooed on his arm!

There are many ways to prove ownership, if she couldn't provide any, then there is a problem. Hell, 75.00 is only cents that I would pay to get my dog back.
