And here we go again...
Thats from the Chicago Sun Times:
22 dogs seized in alleged puppy mill up for adoption June 4, 2009 By Michael Gonzalez, Post-Tribune correspondent GARY -- A local shelter is the new temporary home for 22 of 240 dogs and puppies rescued from a puppy mill Monday in the downstate Corydon area. The Humane Society of Northwest Indiana Inc., 6100 Melton Road, will house the animals for at least a week to make sure they are healthy before offering them for adoption, said executive director Betty Clayton. STEPHANIE DOWELL/POST-TRIBUNE "It's kind of like a maternity ward in there now," Clayton said of a former play area converted to house the animals. The Indiana Attorney General's Office led the raid on the Breezy Valley Farm, a dairy farm owned by Virginia Garwood, as a tax evasion case, alleging Garwood had not paid sales or income taxes on the commercial breeding operation. State Rep. Linda Lawson, a Hammond Democrat who authored a recently passed law that calls for increased action against inhumane puppy mills, participated in the raid. Garwood and her daughter, Kristen Garwood, reportedly sold the dogs through newspaper ads for at least three years, according to a news release issued by the Attorney General's Office. The investigation began after neighbors complained dogs were being kept in squalid conditions. No criminal charges have been filed, and the Garwoods were not arrested.(!) The Humane Society of the United States got involved in the investigation and asked Frieda White, the Miller agency's shelter manager, to help. "It was horrible," White said of conditions inside a house on the farm, where nine female dogs and their litters were kept. "The smell of ammonia from urine was just horrific, and they even kept a dog in the daughter's room, but the outside kennels were clean." White said she learned about the investigation and raid about one week ago. After authorities secured the house and surrounding area, where the kennels were located, White joined about 15 others in recovering the animals. The animals were relocated to an old sewing factory in New Albany, where they received preliminary vaccinations, food and a check-up from a veterinarian. Some of the animals were emaciated, while others had dental problems, White said. It is likely the females were kept in cages for the sole purpose of breeding as many litters as possible, she said, including making "designer dogs," such as mixing a cocker spaniel with a poodle. "From my understanding, (Virginia Garwood) even tried to buy the animals back, to pay for them," White said. The dogs already had interested potential owners Wednesday afternoon. Heather and Ed Starzyk of Hobart spotted the animals while driving by with their two children. They are considering getting a dog, but they refuse to buy one from a pet store, Starzyk said. "If we're adopting one, it's really saving them," she said. Until then, the shelter will need help in the form of monetary gifts or donations of Pedigree brand dog and puppy foods, bleach and paper towels. The cost of adopting the animals, which will include vaccinations and spaying or neutering, has not yet been determined." End of Story. No Arrests were made and no Criminal Charges were filed??? Put those criminal Owners in some of their Cages and let them smell Urine for a few Days! (But please dont use them for Breeding!)
