I remember my grandfather always taking care of his hunting dogs whenever they needed minor surgery, and so did everyone else way back when, and it wasn't even thought of as animal abuse or animal cruelty. Times and rules are always changing things and the older generation is caught up in it without even knowing. How sad.

I thought about that when reading the article. I think home surgery was a common practice back 50 years ago.

I like collecting old books (one hobby of mine) and I have one on dog care dated 1950. The book has many chapters on minor home surgeries. You should have seen the look on my face when I first noticed it.

Listen,People,we don't talk about cleaning or taking Care of a Minor Wound here, the Man,with no medical Knowledge, did Surgery on his Dog !Once again:Would you tolerate it if he did it on his Child?NO,for sure not!A lot of us would give their last Cent to the Vet in Order to save their Pet,or somehow find a Way to find Help, but maybe that Guy should have had his Head examined....sorry.

I was making a point about pet owners doing actual surgery on their pets 50 years ago. IMO, it isn't justified unless a person is knowledgeable and has absolutely no access to a vet, which is rare nowadays, but may happen in extremely rural areas. The person in this story defiantly had access to a vet.

That was bad. Leave it then to the experts. Don't risk the life of your pets

removing a cyst isn't major surgery, and how does anyone know what knowledge the guy had. We did lots of work on animals with nothing but success when I was young on a farm. I didn't do any work, I was too young, but my grandpa, dad and uncles all did. They knew what they were doing, and they wouldn't be putting their animals at risk, it was their livelihood.

I got my ear pierced in high school, had a reaction to the metal and my ear swelled over the tip of the ball stud in my ear and had to be removed. yeah, about a 3/16 diamter gold ball was "in" my ear lobe. Think we went the ER to get it out? hell no, my dad did it. he's a child abuser right?

It's not like this guy was gutting open his dogs to do experiments or to see if the heart would still be beating. it was a cyst on a leg, not a hysterectomy

Well, if they do have the knowledge and skills in operating an animal why not. Plus the materials needed.
