good books about dogs....

hi
since I have no clue wich books are good in english. i ask for your help to point out some good ones.
they can be about training, behaviour, breeding (pregnancy, whelping)
etc.
I am not looking for "beginners" (first time dog owners ones...) books. they can be fairly advanced. even research etc.
I like to get to know more about the terminologie and maybe some more info.
Since i love to read, i would like you to point out wich books are worth buying and why these books are so great in your oppinion....

Thank you
Kat

My favorite dog book is Going for the Blue: Roger A. Caras . I don’t know if that is a beginners book or not, but I really enjoyed it. I also want to read Show me!: D. Caroline Coile but haven’t gotten around to it. Magazines would be helpful too.

Some of my favorites are:

The Inheritance Of Coat Color In Dogs by Clarence Little

Control of Canine Genetic Diseases by George Padgett

The Genetics Of The Dog by Anatoly Ruvinsky & J. Sampson

The Genetic Connection: A Guide To Health Problems in the Pure Bred Dog by Lowell Ackerman

The Natural History of Inbreeding and Outbreeding: Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives by Nancy Wilmsen Thornhill

Each of these books offers a wealth of information on their specific topics. They give a more indepth look as well as a great foundation of knowledge that can only aid in working towards the betterment of ones breed of choice.

Kat,

I really enjoyed "How To Be Your Dog's Best Freind", by The Monks Of New Skeete".

It's about a group of monks at the New Skeete Monastry, near Maine, I think. They raise and train old lines of German Shepherds, started with imported German dogs. It's interesting to see how their quiet lifeslyle, influences their dogs. They also breed and sell their dogs to a select few outsiders. Their studies and use of wolf communication, turned on a few lights in my head!

The book deals with a lot of aspects of living and working with their dogs, care of mother and pups, training philosophies and methods, and their theories about canine body language and communication.
It also shows pups as they grow up and have dogs of all ages at their facility.

This is an older book. But it left it's mark on me. They have a newer book out, You'll need to do a search to find it at Amazon.

The is not a beginner's book. I didn't agree with all of their conclusions or methods, but I think you would enjoy the read. It's very interesting.

This may be a bit off track than what your interested in reading, but it's still dog related and no one has mentioned nutrition. I'm totally impressed with Ann N. Martins book titled "Food Dogs Die For". She's had the dog food companies in and out of court for years. She exposes the rendering plants and what all goes in and on in great detail. I would say a must have book.

Be sure to get the newest edition of "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend". The monks changed some things that they wish they hadn't purported in their first printing (the alpha roll, for one). I have the original version.
Schwe and elegy's suggestions are great! I haven't read Pam Dennison's new book, but I've heard only good things about it. It's also about aggression (Shadow is the dog). I agree, Dogwise is *the place* to shop for dog books. I can't buy them all, either. But I get a 10% discount!

I bought that book the monks put out when I got a Rottie. She was terrible about pulling you down if she saw another dog, and would not mind at all. I used their training with the alpha roll and she bit me in the face. I do not believe in that method for any dog. Some things made sense, but not all.
