Time to start getting worried about BSL - Please read. This has been brought on by the recent "pit bull" attacks. I apologize if this is a duplicate of any other postings and for being off topic. This is no time for "it's not my breed" or its "only" specific breeds. Crosspost far and wide!

Bite stats show high number of bites from Labs. Because, being the #1 popular dog, there are lots of Labs.

OMG! All of "my" breeds are on that freak'n list!

Rottweiler, Pittie, Alasken Malamute, Labrador Retriever, Mastiff, German Shepherd Dog, French Bulldog, Canse Corso, American Bulldog, Akita, Boston Terrier.....

Those Canis Panthers are starting to sound appealing....at least they aren't banned! (Yet.)

Heck, why don't they just ban everthing with a set of teath?!?!? Or, as my mom said when I told her a pug and a Saint were on the list, "They can't ban all of these dogs...why don't they start banning the rapists and murderers!

We were rejoicing. The Texas bill passed the House only and pertains only to the city of Houston. Please pay particular attention to this part of the bill that you would try and prevent by signing a petition. You would be protesting an ANTI BSL!! So please be informed before you react to something. Furthermore, no part of the bill contained any dog breeds as suggested by that organization.:

Sec. 822.1545. LOCAL REGULATION OF DANGEROUS DOGS.
A county or municipality may place additional requirements or restrictions on dogs if the requirements or restrictions:
(1) are not specific to one breed or several breeds of dogs; and (2) are more stringent than restrictions provided by this
subchapter.

Sheesh.

This may be waaaaay off subject, but when I worked as an animal control officer in Birmingham Al the #1 biting dog in the U.S. was the Dalmation..... no joke, in Jeff. Co. Ala... the #1 biting dog was the chow mix. I saw one of these on the list but this is completely retarded.

No argument Bigdog. There is only one city in the state that would be "extempt" from BSL - Houston (or as we like to call it, Miami West). HB1096 did not make it to the Senate before legislative recess. Because of our strong dangerous dog law I am confident that the companion bill SB1111 will fizzle. I haven't found it on any calendar yet or in committee. There are way too many lawyers in Houston, but Austin (the capital) is still full of reps from the rest of the state...which is full of sensible people.

I hope I don't have to eat those words.

If dog lovers really want to help stop BSL, the best thing to do is use your time wisely to email your state and US government reps and senators and your newspapers. http://www.dogwatch.net has tips for effective writing to all of these. Local law makers simply could care less about opinions from people outside of their areas. Make your opinions count. Now I'm off my soapbox...for now.

Robo-I am very surprised that dals didnt make that list. I too have heard of very agressive dals. Actually one time a lady at a pet store (before I knew how bad they were) told me that they would NEVER carry dalmatians because they are way too aggressive. That is funny, they should meet my two. There is also a site on one of the PB BSL sights that has attacks by other dogs and I would say that there were at least 4 on a list of about 50 that involved dals. Most of the problem with them is the whole 101 dals movie. I have to admit I LOVE that movie but I do recognize what it has done to the breed. I promise you ever single kid that I see when I have my dogs knows exactly what type of dog it is and usually start screming "dalmatian dog" until we are way out of sight. I was actually pleasntly surprised the other day when one little girl said "those are fire dogs". Sorry I guess I got a little off topic too.

On the subject though I could not believe most of the dogs that were on that list. When will people (to quote a PB site) punish the deed and not the breed? Once they ban pit bulls they will go after breeder after breed until we have no dogs left! I personally LOVE PB's. I think they are great dogs. I have only met a couple but the ones that I have met would never bite anyone for any reason other than defending their owner (like a typical dog would). I think they are very cute sweet dogs and it isnt fair what these people are doing to them. I have come to realize that people DO believe everything that they read. They dont see pit bulls as dogs they see them as monsters. I mean wolves attack people, why not ban them? What about cats? Cats bite all of the time and cat bites are nasty and can easily get infected. Maybe we should ban cats too. And bears, and tigers and snakes exc...Sorry I am ranting a little bit.
