Exclamation Animal planets animal cops and all those pitbulls!!

Okay, as if the media doesn't exploit the pitbull enough what about all the animal cop shows on Animal Planet. Every dog they rescue is a pitbull. Newyork, Detroit, Miami dade Florida (pitbulls are illegal to own) San francisco, Texas. Why, why is it always the pitbull on these shows.

As I see it most dogs that are rescued on that show are from families that can't afford or do not have the knowledge to care for a dog. Many of them are poor families and because of fighting pits are easy to come by. It's sad to see it happen that way. Any pit that is a known fighter they euthanize.

any major city, even a lot of small ones have a huge problem with pittbulls. way too many people without a clue as how to own, train, or love a dog in these cities and they all want pittbulls. When these shows are taped in big cities they're going to show what's there, and unfortuneatly its pittbulls. All of our shelters around here are overflowing with pitt mixes. I'd like to know where they're all coming from?

I agree with GSD -- the shows are just portraying what's really going on out there. But I think they're actually good for pit bulls, because many of the dogs they rescue are rehabilitated and rehomed. And it's always presented very tragically when they end up putting a dog down.

I've seen a lot of dogs on these shows -- GSDs, Labs, Australian Shepherds, Rotties, mutts -- but you're right, the majority seem to be pits/pit mixes.

We just have Lab mixes around here. I think I've only seen two Pit mixes in our shelter for almost 6 months. But then around Lafayette...well...there are a good number of them, but you hardly ever see them here. It seems like Rotties and Boxers are the "tough" breeds to own here.

Hmm....try: Irrisponsible people letting their intact Pitties run loose to terrorize people and dogs alike, while getting other peoples intact dogs or intact strays pergnant?

I've noticed that also, it's not really concertrating on what is really happening to animals out there, and more so than anything are concertrating on pitbull fights and the issues that they have with them in the city, if watch the programme more often than not 7-8/10 dogs will be pitbulls which isn't right .

There's no such thing as a bad dog only a bad owner.

I think there are so many pitbulls on those shows because there are so many pitbull type. I know that around my town there are more pitbull and pitbull type (and I Know that a lot of dogs "look" like pitbulls but are not) then about any other type. Furthermore, the type of people that treat dogs in a way that requires them to be on a show like that ususally want "tough" and "scary" gaurd dogs, and pitbulls are the ticket. Pitbulls are often mix and bred horribly making them cheap.

I am not upset by all the media coverage in this type on pitbulls because it is rarely negative. Even when I was watching an episode where the dogs were used for fighting and had to be put to sleep, the pitbulls themselves, while abused and starving, were the sweetest to the rescuers. I think that images like the starving, beaten pitbull does more to make people realize that they are just dogs who are owned by terrible people.
