Puppy swallows 13-inch knife
PLANTATION, Florida (AP) -- The veterinarian thought the X-ray was a joke.
Jon-Paul Carew has seen strange items get into the stomachs of dogs before, things like kebab skewers and small utensils. But a 13-inch serrated knife in a 6-month-old puppy?
That was a new one.
"I was just flabbergasted," said Carew, of Imperial Point Animal Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.
The knife was removed this week from Elsie, a Saint Bernard puppy. The dog's owner, Jane Scarola, wrapped it in a towel and put it in a cabinet atop the refrigerator.
"I'm going to frame it and give it to Dr. Carew," Scarola said. "He should hang it. Everybody should know what puppies are capable of putting down their throats."
She thinks one of her six other dogs -- four Saint Bernards, a German shepherd and a Labrador -- somehow got the knife off a counter and it eventually made its way to Elsie.
"She wants to eat everything and anything," Scarola said.

They were on the Today show yesterday. I was surprised to see the size of the knife. How he managed to swallow it and live baffles me. It's a huge serrated knife.

Wow!Poor Dog.How could she fit that down?She probably swallowed it dll-handle end first, right, or she could of had some major problems.

Yes, it went down handle first, but why on earth would a dog swallow something that large!! You would think it would have choked her to death. Wow!! Unbelievable!!!!

I've been very careful with the Kitchen Knives since I've seen that story on the 6 o Clock News. I don't leave any knives lying around the edges of my Kitchen Counters. I don't want my little Sweetiewheatie to get hurt, or killed.

I can't believe that!

Well.. I do, but that's insane. Although it's a reminder to make sure the house is puppy proofed. I think I'll go over my place again to make sure there's nothing swallowable.
