I go to dog shows all of the time - to date I have never seen a judge, exhibitor, or another dog attacked in either of these rings. The animals are always excellently behaved, well-socialized, friendly, and outgoing. What gives? Again, I look at who owns them and who breeds them. People that love and understand their breed, don't take its power for granted, educate the public, and are the first to stand on the front lines of bsl.
i imagine it's the same in the UKC ring with american pit bull terriers. it's all about who owns them and how they are owned, the time put into them, and how they are taught to behave.

look at akitas- they have "dog aggressive" written right into the breed standard but they are not so popular with idiots and people lacking in the gonads department so they don't cause nearly the problems or the media circle.

i love my dogs to death. they are no threat to anyone. i would never allow them to be.

it always baffles me when people say the breed should not be banned but there should be strict rules about who can own them. i mean, come on. byb-ers are going to sell their unsound, unsafe dogs to whoever has the cash to lay down. animal control officers can't even keep up with the laws already in place. and who is going to define "pit bull" anyway?

luce is a little red-nosed dog from the shelter but she has a piece of paper from the akc saying that she is allowed to compete in their dog sports as an american staffordshire terrier? so what does that make her? i mean, other than just another good pet dog.

Exactly. If there were numerous incidents of the apbts going ape at dog shows, you can bet the media would have a field day. I've yet to hear of it.

I agree with most here as that most pit's are docile in nature but you have to take a closer look at the breed . As I have owned and still do , have a "Bullie" {bullmastiff}. For those here that believe There is not a agressive spark within this breed. They are just kidding Themselves. I have been around countless k9s of this breed as I have many Friends that use the dog for sport ,not fighting but hunting Boars. A 45 pound pit that will wimper at a Owners scolding, Knows no bounds slinging from the Business end of a 275 pound Havalena Hawg with 6' cutters. The Grit of these Breeds are amazinging if not Humbling once witnessed .
So back to square one , Of where the Dogs socialization and history is involved. I know in High populated Urban under development area's better fraise for "Ghetto". these Dogs are fought for sport, on the same end they are raised and bred for that purpose at high volumes, so in-breeding and mentally desructive acts are thrown into the breed.
These people dont want a social Dog.....They want a mindless ,Emotionless Killin machine, the Heart and competiveness of this breed is just a bonus. So does it boil down to Owner Responsibility to a extent..Absolutely.
On the same Token, Would I allow a child interact with my Bullie?....Yes..Would I Allow a Child to play "Stick" unattended with my Bullie in the back yard alone ?.. Absolutely Not!
If you have never Played "Tug-o-War" with one of these breed's I would highly recomend it ,To grasp the power these Dog can Exert, Before sending young Billy out for a wind up for disaster. The Idea of Him running Backside ,Holding the "stick" overhead at around 5' to 6' hiegth. With Dog in "playmode" and in persuit, Sends shivers down my spine. The Dog wants To retrieve his "Toy" and never realized it was Billies arms or Fingers that he actually crunched down on.
These dogs for a lack of a better words are "Bone crushers". They get excited, They love to play, and sometimes Roughly.
Probably ruffled a few feathers here, with some protesting their childern play hours upon end with there pit. All situations are unique, Dogs Age, Sex, Physical Stamina. Myself other than family members that are "trained" as well as the animal in correct handling methods, I would not advise it
