While I'd like to give The Sun the benefit of the doubt, this story is clearly a hoax.

First, the name of this nefarious fisherman is never mentioned ; the author refers to the local Reunion Island police as "the cops" ; the hook shown is not a hook that would be used for large sharks, but instead appears to be a barbless tuna double hook (if it IS a fishing hook at all) ; and the dog shown in the plainly obvious photoshop-created picture is not in any distress.

If that weren't enough, a quick online check of Reunion Island's newspaper, Le Journal de I'lle, doesn't mention any such outrageous story, and (perhaps not surprising) a search of French Embassy press releases doesn't substantiate The Sun's claims either.

And for pete's-sake, a golden retriever? Sacre bleu!
I found the above on http://www.underwatertimes.com/forum...pic.php?p=1773. I think I may have to agree that it is indeed fake...

RSPCA link to shark bait story

Snopes (hoax buster site) on the shark bait story, this was the best link I found

The Daily news story Bridget Bardot is MAD about the shark bait..story here

Video of the dog in the picture with the hooks through it...in French but still unsettling.....

This is what I found out about RSPCA (the people in the first link)
"M'Eyari - The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPCA) is the largest animal welfare society in the UK and certainly not prone to jumping off at the deep end, they are very considered about what they will speak up not. " I personally know nothing about them but this is what I found.
Though it has yet to be confirmed as a hoax or as a true horrific story I sure hope it is a hoax.

I would have to say I think it's a fake too. There's no Blood or anything to show injury. That was the 1st thing I noticed.. also when you look at the "hooks" comeing out of the mussle area.. it's not "inset" eoungh in the skin if you know what I mean.

If I am not wrong.. by looking at the lighting.. there should a shadow from the hook. "Should be" I'm not sure about that though. LOL

Just my .02

I am hoping for not true also but the hook is very obviously int he dog in the video.....did you watch it?
This is where typing does not do the trick.....no inflection in the voice....I am not being snotty in asking. I am just asking if you watched the video and if you thought they could fake that too....Or if maybe the dog just got the hook in there somehome...I don't know, I just want it to be fake.

My god!!!! That is crazy! After watching that video, I have to say it's pretty real, but whether it was purposely used as bait or just happened to got stuck somehow I think will remain a mystery. But if it happens to more then one dog, then !@#$!@#$!@$T@#%#$^%^

well yes we hope it is a hoax though there would be no blood if he had had this for many days and weeks... there would be nothing but what there was... hook in mouth... they deserve nothing better if it is true then to be drug behind a boat with hook is in their face and legs..

The video looks real, but I hope the story is that this dog accidently got tangled in the hook.
How gross

The Sun is a British tabloid comparable to The National Enquirer in the US. Don't assume anything from them is true.

Yea I was thinking the same until TribalRats posted a video link earlier from another source other than the SUN. Have you look at that source video link yet? It seems to real to me. In case you missed it, here it is again.

Why there were no blood bleeding was probably due to soaking in the saltwater for too long.
