One Man. 25 Dogs. A World Record.

Kanab, UT (8/11/2005) – Here’s two for the record books: One man at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary successfully walked 22 dogs one whole mile today. And he also walked 25 dogs
one kilometer.

What a sight it was, watching John Garcia first successfully guide 25 dogs through the 1 kilometer (6/10 mile) mark in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the most dogs walked by one person. He then pushed on with 22 dogs for the seemingly impossible one-mile mark.

John was confident, and so were the dogs. They had actually started out with a canine crew of 26 but one dog lost her footing and was unleashed from the rest of the team. Now, John and the pack of 25 had their eyes set on the minimum the folks at Guinness would consider for the world record. With that goal accomplished, they kept trotting up the dirt road with trainers running alongside, shouting encouragement. Three more dogs came loose from the leash but that still left a pack of 22 charging up the hill with John in tow.

And then they came around the bend and the spectators assembled at a spot called Angels Landing started shouting as they realized that John and this amazing number of dogs had not only made their goal, but were now on their way to the mile marker.

“I am on such an adrenalin rush!” John shouted. “The dogs are the ones who did it. They deserve the praise.”

What’s next for John and the dogs? “Most of these dogs are up for adoption and hopefully will be in homes by the time I’m ready to break the record next year,” John said.

I wonder why Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer), and Cheri Lucas (Second Chance at Love Humane Society), haven't tried out for this record? They walk their combined packs of around 100 dogs together, on the roads around Cheri's property in Templeton, CA.
Maybe they have too many helpers bringing up the rear & picking up poops to qualify!

I didn't stay for the 100 dog walk when I was down at the seminar. I'll bet it was quite a sight!

That is a great story! I didn't know that you could set a record for walking lots of dogs or else I would have done it! LOL

With our newest addition I thought walking 3 poodles at a time was a challenge. At least it gives passer bys a good chuckle.

I routinely walk a 60 lb husky, 82 lb rottweiler and 12 lb shih tzu. Of course, I have also met many nice people who stop their cars and offer to help me get untangled and out of the ditch. Oh well, what a crew!
