So what exactly is this spin move? It's not seriously picking a dog up by it's leash and spinning it around is it?

Cass.

Cass,

This sounds like an emergency manuver used in advanced police and military work, to break off a full blown attack.

Feinwerkbau seems like he might know what the specific manuver entails.

D Frost would probably be able to tell us some more, due to his experience in handling canine "soldiers", during wartime.

Like in all areas, there are variations, and let me state clearly, none of which I like or condone.

One is to lift the dog straight up and spin it around it's own axis.

The other is to grab the leash, dig in and start spinning the dog round like a carnival ride with the handler at the centre and the dog at the end of the leash.

It sounds to me like this instance was the latter.

If I saw that happen the dog trainer would have two broken legs and a black eye to boot.

Actually, I recall a JRT round my hood sometime back that likes to be swung round like a carnival ride! Some dogs are seriously strange. But he was in a safety harnesse and the whole thing was play for both handler and dog.

When the handler got tired, and let the dog loose, it kinda walked around like it was drunk and it was quite a sight! LOL! Oh well, the dog was happy!

My doberman Cassie, had a passion for a huge rope swing in my back yard, so I taught her how to swing and spin on it by her teeth!

She absolutely LOVED that thing! She really had a blast with that old knotted rope. No wonder she went so far when she went into guard dog work, after I puppy raised her. Jaws of steel!

I think we all know the difference between what a dog enjoys in their sometimes "twisted" little doggie ways, and abuse in the hands of a brute.

My Dad did that with Kessy. when they were playing fetch , she grabed the stick bit into it and my Dad swung her arround, up in the air, round and round, she wouldn't let go... she loved it....
probably still does but well we just see my dad if he comes visit, or we visit

Seems odd he makes money to abuse animals.
Give me some rope and 5 minutes alone with him, I'll put a new meaning to his 'spinning technique',

Ohhhh thats harsh. MY dog is hyperactive and no matter what she does she will NEVER get the helicopter...never. A dog at my old club bit his handler and he got the helicopter, this dog was HUGE must have been a 100+lbs GSD. After he got that correction he cringed and turned timid....we never saw that dog back on the field again. I have NO problems correcting a dog when needed, but somethings just shouldnt be done, to any dog.
I have heard of people sticking there pinky up a dogs bum to get them to out....thats a little bt harsh for me, I dont think i could stomache seeing that.
Something else I really dont like is flanking, it just disgusts me. How can people do these things to dogs?

Good grief! well hopefully after this the fellow will have to find new employment.... it would be a frosty friday when I'd let some airhead do that to my dog.

That's horrible! I hope he's never allowed to train again.

I went to obedience school when I was 10 with my Irish Setter, I had taught her to give paw for a treat. He hated that. So everytime she gave paw, he'd grab it and squeeze it til she cried. After a few days of that, it upset me so much that I kicked him in the face and stormed out. In a way it was bad because the puppy didn't go to obedience school then and had behavioral problems, and my family started viewing training as abuse and something mean, but from what I learned now, that trainer was downright wrong.
