Dog Trainer Breaks Dog's Leg

Everytime I read something like this, I cringe. BTW, this trainer is *not* an APDT member.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/kprc/20051123/lo_kprc/3078395

A Houston-area dog owner says her beloved pet was injured because of a move made by its dog trainer, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Manny is a 7-month-old mutt with a medical history. His owner wanted to break the puppy of his hyperactive habits, but she said a trainer at a League City obedience school broke Manny's leg."He called it the spin move," owner Jennifer Wetmore said.It happened when Manny's trainer grabbed him by the leash and lifted him off the ground, spinning the dog in circles. But on the last spin, the trainer tripped and Manny came down, according to Wetmore.

"He did have blood on both of his back feet," she said.John Barnes, the trainer and owner of Doggie U, told Wetmore and KPRC that he spun the dog after Manny bit him. But it was not until after Wetmore asked Barnes for help with the vet bills that he told her that Manny should be euthanized.League City animal control quarantined Manny, but told KPRC that there's no reason to declare the dog as dangerous.

Animal trainers who KPRC contacted believed that Barnes is the one who is more of a threat -- to animals.

"Mainstream trainers don't use any such tactics like that. That is definitely animal abuse," said Jim Burwell, with Rover Oaks.

Barnes refused an on-camera interview, but told KPRC that the spin move is an accepted training maneuver he learned at a dog training school. But, the National K-9 Learning Center for dog trainers, based in Ohio, where Barnes attended but never graduated, said "the move is a last resort only to be used when an animal is attacking."Manny's owner hopes time will heal her puppy's wounds and that other animals don't suffer the same fate.

Oh, this is just so sad! When will some of these heavy handed people realise the damage they can do both physically and mentally to a dog.

Most experienced canine handlers would never do this "manuver" even if a dog is completely out of control or in attack mode. All fours off the ground, spinning in midair?! No justification for it, period.

What the heck was the owner doing? Watching? A friend of a friend had a trainer do something similar to their dog. They thought it was sad, but never did a thing about it. THAT makes me mad.

I'm horrified by this, but I have to say I have no clear picture in my head of what the 'spin move' is. Can anyone explain it a little better?

Cass.

GAWD!! It sounds like they pick the dog up by the leash and spin it around in the air! If I saw that happen I would report it to the police! That makes my heart thud in my ears I'm so mad!

NOOOOO that is terrible
I so totally cant stand people who bully animals to make them obey.
I remember when Izzie went to her one and only training day ()
the guy wanted me to use a choker chain.. hell she is only a little tibbie.
I went to another handler who was happy to show me how to do things gently with a harness. izzie was happy and did well and I was happy too

Are their any requirements that have to be met to call yourself a trainer or handler?????

OMG! How could anybody think that that was a trainer for even a second? I mean, if I saw somebody do that to one of my dogs, they'd be down! (With either me or Blackie on top of them!)
The 4H class I was in used the traditional meathods, and I didn't particuarly like them, but I had to get Blackie into an obedience class and I could just kinda do my own thing, so I was happy.
Anyways, there was this great big Airedale Terrier who did NOT like being corrected. Every time he was, he'd go to bite his owner. And of course, every time he did, the girl who was handling him would freak out and her dad would come over and chew the dog out. I felt so bad for that poor pup. He'd even do it to the trainer who tried to get him to listen. And again, they used force to show the dog "who was boss".
I was just looking at them and thinking, "That dog is a terrier, it doesn't like being punished, and it has a dominance issue! They need to get that thing out of the choke chian and start using positive reinforcment and put it on an NILIF program..."

Some dogs do well with a Choke Chain, some don't. Some excel with a pinch collar, some don't. But when somebody misuses these or even lays a hand on the dog in a nonplacing and/or nonloving manner, then they are abusing the dog, IMO.
I mean, even when you place a dog using your hands, you still better be gentle about it. I don't really like placing either...I prefer luring instead.

What it boils down to is choose a training style that your dog will love, and choose a trainer who knows what s/he is doing, or your dog will suffer for it.
Even though the 4H trainers did use the Choke Chain and used force, they also knew that you were not supposed to hit/kick/abuse your dog, and they realized that dogs needed the praise. They just used a loud voice and a jerk on the collar to discipline a dog, which I don't even like to do.
If Blackie is being a brat, I have him do pushups (sit, down, sit, down, sit down) with only a mini amount of praise. I find he listens better after that.

Anyways, that man just makes me sick.

Unfortunately, some trainers still believe in this move. In some parts, it's called 'helicoptering the dog'.

It's high time some people move out of the dark ages. It's just not right.

You know, someone might do this to a dog because they're stupid, someone might do this because they're ignorant, someone might do this because they are a brute.

This guy is all three. A stupid, ignorant brute, has NO business "handling" dogs.

It's awful, isn't it. I've seen video and have spoken with people who witnessed first hand this type of training used by a very well known trainer who shall remain nameless (started a professional trainer's organization). There are plenty of people (general dog owning public) who believe that this *is* training! I once had a guy here in town tell me he didn't want to take his Bulldog to one of my group classes because he didn't want the dog's spirit broken! He thinks that is what I would do to his dog! BTW, his dog later was quarntined for 10 days after biting someone.
