River can now travel in style (and safely!)

River has been able to get himself out of every type of harness seat belt I could get my hands on regardless of how tight I thought it was on him. So I've been a very bad dog mum and had him travelling loose in the car

A recent conversation with my brother (where he worked out how many trips a year River actually makes in the car) kicked my butt into gear big time so I hit the 'net in search of the best car seat I could find - and this is what I came up with:

The harness comes fitted into the seat and because there's straps on both sides the theory is if you do have to brake suddenly the force would be distributed evenly throughout the body - I'm hoping I'm never going to find that out for a fact though!! And because he can move around in it (sit up, lay down, stand etc) and it's comfy he so far hasn't felt the need to struggle around in the harness so I'm hoping he won't be able to find a way out of it either.

Anyway - here's some pics of the first test run in the car - he sulked a bit at first but then relaxed and even started to enjoy it a bit I think!!

Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed he'll get back in it next time we go out to the car now he knows what it is!

Good luck, hopefully River won't find a way out of this! It looks like a great doggy car seat. River sounds just like Abby, she can slip her way out of anything. Is the doggy car seat actually attached to anything? I couldn't tell from the photos.

I've spent a princess ransome on different car seats and they just wont stay in them. We get a mile (if that) and one of them is hanging over the side all twisted so tight we have to pull over and get them back in. It just doesn't work for us. I've been thinking of a way to just attach their leashes so they can just sit in the seat instead.
Does River get out of that seat, or does he like being in it?

He seems happy enough to stay in there - I think he knows he's really got no choice. He did try to get out when we went down to the beach but wasn't game enough to get off of it completely (didn't get more than his front paws off the side) - we just told him to sit back down and he did which was great. I guess it's not such an issue with him as he's a lot bigger than your girls so wouldn't be hanging off the side if he did get out of it.

Can't you buy those straps that have a seatbelt buckle (insert) on one end and a leash-type clip on the other, to clip to the dog's harness? Or have you tried the little seatbelt harness systems like that?

River looks very cute! Fingers crossed this is the final solution! I taught Missie to stay in her seat by telling her to sit any time she started to crawl out. I also started out putting a chewie (edible or non) in the seat with her. She is an absolute pro at sitting in her seat now! The only time we had a problem, I turned around because she kept whining and found Ollie trying to get into her seat with her! lol She was just staring at me talking like, "Mom, get him out!!"

Yes, they have the seat belt harnesses but they still end up hanging over the sides. I sold one car seat and now have two more to sell.

Hank is too small IMO to harness but sounds like River and Montana have lots in common as harness Houdini's.

I put Hank in a crate in the car but Montana is loose in the car, we make her sit on the floor in the back so she is not up and about.

Love to hear how this seat works for you and how you like it as time goes by.

Do you have bucket seats? Seems like in that case it would make more sense to rig up a band around the back of the chair that you clip them to. I bet there's some product out there that would work perfectly... lol
Here's what I meant: http://www.canineauto.com/index.htm

And here's some other seatbelt systems I came across that look really neat! http://www.ruffrider.com/
