That's so sweet!
It's like the hens want to make friends with Lola. |

I'm not sure if I can bring myself to eat the broilers. We ended up with chickens when my daughter was 5 and she begged us to rescue 6 chickens left in pine trees across from my in-laws. A hawk or owl had been picking them off one by one until six were left, we don't know where they came from but we set to rescuing them. I found out if you wait until dark chickens go into a trans like state and yopu can catch them really easy. We took our dog crate and brought home six chickens. I built and off the ground small coop with an inclosed run. After about two weeks we let them free rome and they'd return to where it was safe, they were a wild group. A miss matched group of the best chickens! One rhode island red let my girl swing on the swing set and hold her...Brownie fallowed her everywhere for 5 years! Poor Brownie passed this spring and the tears for a chicken were amazing! My hubby grew up on farm and he said Brownie changed his mind of how he thought of chickens. We have only one of the original flock still alive...it will be a sad day when Big Patty leaves us...she is getting very old for a chicken. We raised the rest from hatchlings, 14 all together. They are bantoms and buff orfingtons(SP?) It has been a great experience and the eggs are the best!!! If anyone has the room I recomend chickens! It is cheeper to keep 6 chickens and get eggs than it is to buy eggs in the store! The biggest bonus is they free range and eat fleas and tics, plus other spiders and bugs that are harmful to dogs and cats!

Make me want to move somewhere I can have farm animals.
That is just adorable. I never really cared for live chickens. I was raised on a farm and my grandparents had them. I use to catch crawdads and throw them into the hen house and watch them jump and squak while pecking away at the pinchers. Too funny!!! |

Those big white ones in the video are broilers (i'm pretty sure). How old are they? They usually don't live very long. Normally they die of heart attacks and leg problems at a very young age.

We got them this spring, they are around 12 weeks old..I know they don't live long so soon they will be gone...just not sure if I could put them on my plate. We maybe donating them to a needy family...at least they will serve a good cause.

Yes I don't think I could raise them and kill them either. I rescued a broiler from the road and she lived her last 4 weeks with me. Giving them to a needy family is a great idea.
