Some of the shelter dogs..
I've started volunteering at my local shelter. I have volunteered to help take pictures for petfinder. Here are some of the ones I took today.
Lucky the Dutch rabbit

Oh, they are all so cute! I couldn't stand helping out at a shelter...I'd want to scoop all of the dogs up with me and take them home. I think every single dog on "death row" would be coming home with me...

I can't believe how nice these animals look!!! You should see the poor things in our local shelter. They look terrible poor things and most are Pit Bulls that usually never get adopted.

There are a lot of pit bulls and a lot of dogs get euthanized but there is a great staff and they try their best to get everyone taken care of and adopted.

theyre lucky to have such a great staff. our local shelter is a little corrupt, its gotten better over the years but my mama was kinda bitter about me doing my senior nhs volunteer project there...

Here are the stats for last month. They really depress me. I'm going to volunteer tomorrow.
Animal Control numbers for August 2008

Total number of calls for service answered – 480
Call breakdown:
Officers responded to: 234 stray pick up calls (includes injured),
116 leash law complaints, 59 cruelty/welfare calls,
4 wildlife calls, 21 possible bites,
6 fence checks for adoption,
2 loose livestock or welfare,
38 misc. calls

>> 117 pet owners brought their pets into the shelter in August 2008<<
>>93 animals were brought into the shelter by citizens of Paulding as strays<<
Total number of animals processed through the shelter –

Total number of animals adopted to new homes – 109
(Dogs 35, Cats 11 , Puppies 39, Kittens 23, other 1)
“Of the adopted animals 39 were pre-altered by Paulding Humane Society
These require no follow up and remove the risk of accidental breeding.”

Total number of animals reclaimed by their owners – 38
(Dogs 32, cats 4, puppies 1, Kittens 1)

Total number of animals released to animal rescue groups - 76
(Dogs 34, Cats 7, puppies 22, Kittens 12, other 1)

Total number of animals Euthanized – 289
(Dogs 53, Cats 69, Kittens 131, puppies 36)

Total number of animals that died of injuries or illness – 61
(Dogs 7, Cats 5, kitten 44, puppies 5)

Total number of bite cases were handled – 22

Total number of rabies specimens sent to CDC – 3 (negative)

He is beautiful! I wonder if he will be there tomorrow when I go back. I almost got him/her but he would have to be neutered and I can't afford that right now. Vets around here charge 3xs more for rabbits to be neutered than cats.
