Yup...

Well, Nell got back from being spayed, and will have to go back in 14 days to take the stitches out. She's doing very well, and the gals at the vet really like her. Said she did very well.

Well, really bad news. Today was day 4 after the spay, and she's having major problems. She seemed fine up until yesterday, no redness, no licking, etc. And her only activity was to just go outside to go potty and come back in. And when I'm not home, she stays in her crate, and when I am home, she either crawls up on my sofa and rests next to me, or lays at my feet. She doesn't even get up to go and eat or drink, as I have her stay and bring the food and water to her. But anyways, this morning she seemed fine, went out to go potty and came back in. Then I put the dogs in their crates and went to work. Came home for lunch and she was licking lots. Then I looked, and it was oozing lots, and I mean a whole lot. It scared me to death, lol. I immediately called the vet and they said there were no doctors available until after 4pm, as they were all in surgeries. They told me she would be ok until then and to bring her in then. So I went back to work and got off early to take her in. They said they would clean it up a bit and put her on antibiotics and she'll be ok. So I waited. 10 minutes later they came out and said they need to keep her overnight, and they had to move her over to emergency due to severe infection. It was a lot worse than they expected, and had to open her back up. I'm supposed to call tomorrow after 9am to get a status, and will let you all know. The only thing that had me concerned was 2 bubbles at the ends of the incision that were getting bigger and bigger, but I was told to just watch her carefully, and if she's not licking, and not red or oozing or bleeding, that she was ok. Well, today was day 4 after the spay. How can an infection set in so fast and get so bad in only 4 days? It's nerve wracking.....

Edit:
So they are having to re-open her up and flush her out tonight and then she's being put on a strong antibiotic. Hope all goes well.

Eek! Keep us updated on how she's doing. Chloe had a mild infection after her spay, but I think it was an anesteitc reaction more than anything because her stiches were fine, she just had an upset stomach, no energy, no appetite, loose poop...put her on antibiodics and she was fine after that.

Actually, it wasn't loose poop. The puss and ooze was running out of her stitches in puddles. At first when I got there, they said they were just going to clean her up a bit and put her on antibiotics, but afterwards they came out and had to take her to emergency and reopen part of it to flush out. Said it was extremely infected under the stitches. But I called this morning at 9am and they said she's doing much better this morning and they still want to keep her til the end of the day. So I'll be picking her up after work at 5:30 tonight. As for energy, she wanted to play, but I kept her near me, laying down. And also had her in her crate as well, when I needed to do things with the other dogs. She'll probably be on the cone now, lol. Or maybe the spray they told me about, so she doesn't lick. I'll find out tonight.

Also, it was Nell that got spayed, not Chloe. Nell was in heat when I got her from another gal, so I couldn't get her spayed right away. Finally decided to get it done before she goes into heat again, she's the one having problems. As for Chloe, she's 4yrs old and was already spayed as a pup, so I didn't have to go through anything with her. I was able to take her right home from the Humane Society since all her shots were up to date, got microchipped, and was already spayed.

Well, she's now home with me, and I have things I have to give her 2 times a day. Should have seen her when I went to pick her up, lol. She was so full of excitement, lol. The first time I picked her up, you could tell whe wasn't feeling good and a bit sore. But today it's like she could run an agility course, lol. But we got home, and the very first thing she had to do was to go potty in the yard, both pee and poo. Then after going, she then had to go pee again, lol. But now she's doing great. Got her inside and let the other dogs out, she's now just laying down chewing on a bone. Got to keep her from too much excitement, and crate her when needed. As long as she's laying by me on the couch, I don't see the need to crate her, but if she tries to play with Betty and Chloe, then she'll be crated. Supposed to keep her activity minimal for 7 days. But anyways, she's doing fantastic.....

Very glad to hear she's doing better! Poor Nellie gir-ul.....Now you'll just have to help her watch her weight, but with all the activities you do, I don't think that will be a problem.

As active as she is, I don't need to worry about her weight, lol. I'm having a tough time keeping her mellow right now, lol. She's feeling really, really good. She's eating good, and her poo is good and solid as well. Been giving them raw beef ribs the last couple nights to keep Nell's activity level down. She'd rather chew on a fresh beef rib than run around the house, lol. Pretty much keeps her quiet all night, lol.

Update.....

Nell is doing very well. She is so full of energy, and it's great to see. Took her to the vet tonight to get her stitches removed, and they said it all healed up very well, and that she has no more restrictions. I even asked them about jumping and water, and they said if I wanted to wait a few more days, it's up to me, but they said she's perfectly fine and can now get a bath if I want, and take her running. So that's good, but for my personal concience, I might wait a few more days for the high energy activities like frisbee, etc. And she's still pretty clean, so I don't need to bathe her just yet, so I'll wait a little on that as well. But anyways, the infection had really freaked me out, lol. It was pretty scary. But it also gives me some experience as well, now that I've gone through it all, I won't have to go blindly through the next time, if there is one.

Now I have a problem with Chloe, lol. She's been chewing kind of funny since I got her, and thought it was just a tooth that needed cleaning and was going to get her teeth cleaned next week when she goes in for her checkup. Well, I was doing some cleaning, and found a tooth that was actually split in half. Ouch. Wonder how much that's going to cost to get fixed. It never ends, lol. Also, got my new sig up. Let's see if it shows up on here. Hope I did it right, lol.

Welcome to GP

Love the pics of your crew - have a definite soft spot for Betty though, reminds me of my parents' ACD, they're such beautiful dogs.

So glad everything worked out with Nell and the infection and hopefully Chloe's tooth problem works itself out too.

Nice signature too

Well, we went to the vet today, and it turned out not as bad as we thought. They called it a slab break, it was just the outer surface that broke off. Because the way it curved around the tooth, to me it looked like it was broke in half. But it was really thin. He took Chloe back and removed the slab, and brought her back out. He said that there is a possibility that the tooth could die off, but he's pretty confident that it will be ok. He said if she has any more problems with it, that they could sedate her and cut the tooth in half and remove the bad half. It's the pre-molar, and he said it's got 3 roots. So, all went good. She also got her rabies shot, as we didn't know if the previous owners already had her shots done or not. She's already got all her other shots at the humane society, so she didn't need them. Now that the slab is removed, he said the gum can now heal and all should be good. There was also no sign of infection, as he said there was the possibility that food could have gotten into that slab and caused problems, but all looked good and clean. They also only charged me for the exam as well, and nothing for the tooth. He said he would just include that with the exam. Pretty cool. And he said I might want to brush that tooth more often than I normally do the rest of the teeth, as it can possibly build plaque quicker, as there's no more enamel for protection. I'm glad it went well, and he said Chloe did fantastic. Didn't jump, yelp, or anything when he removed the slab. And when she came out with him, she was very happy. It's nice having a dog that has that much trust that she's not going to get hurt or anything, or is nippy when things like this happens. She was perfectly calm through the whole thing.

Well, another thing, I know how much she weighs now, lol. She's 40.8 lbs. Betty is about 36 lbs and Nell is 41.2 lbs. Nell looks the lightest, but is actually the heaviest, lol. And she's got almost no fat on her at all. All muscle. Same with Betty, she's solid, and I thought she would be the heaviest because she's so stocky. But she's a little shorter from head to tail.
