Photoshop fun.

Ok, I'm TERRIBLE at doing much in photoshop, and finally today figured out how to do something I've been "trying" to do for some time now. Really wasn't that hard, but until ya know how, it can be pretty frustrating.

So this was my first attempt at just leaving part of a picture in color. I want to try this again but leave the green stem in color too (will probably take me AGES though..haha), I think it'll look a tad better then just the red part of the roses left.

Pretty cool. Soon you will be a pro at it. I like Photoshop, used it quite often when I did web design, and now I use it to fix and resize pics I take with my Nikon camera for posting online.

Any tips on specifics wouldn't go amiss! LOL Seriously, it took me that long to figure this out that it'll be a loooong time before I'll be anything close to a pro!

I have the patience to actually DO the task I want to do, but no patience at all trying to figure out how. I get easily frustrated when I can do something relatively quickly. The only patience I seem to have is with my dogs, I guess I should try and extend that patience into other areas of my life too.

Tried the pic again leaving the stem/leaves too.

Well judging by your signature, I think you'd have a pretty easy time of it. Obviously you have used the freehand selection tool already. Simply select all of the outer portion of the picture that you don't want in color (start at the edges, makes it easier, and use the rectangle or a shaped tool where you can cut away bigger sections if there's nothing in it you want to keep color). Then use the freehand tool to extend those sections around what you want to keep color. You have to start the selection in an area that you've already selected (makes it easier), go around what you want to leave color and join the freehand back up where you started the selection. You can do it in small sections or large ones.....I find doing a bit at a time is easier for on the hands since you have to keep the mouse so steady to keep "on the lines". Once you've selected everything you want in black and white/sepia, just click on the toolbar on the effect that does it, and voila.

You can't just select around the object you want in color, or that'll be the part you'll get in black and white. Hope that makes sense.

That looks awesome, Karen! I, too, have played around with Photoshop and picked up a few tricks... Most of which I don't remember, but it's probably like riding a bicycle.. It'll come back to me.

Here's one I did of Mazie about a year or two ago.

Well, I always take my pics on the best resolution the camera has. I then take it into Photoshop and immediately do a Auto Levels under the Image/Adjustments. After that, if the pic looks too bright or doesn't look right, do a CTRL-Z to undo. Then if you aren't sure about the undoing, you can hit the CTRL-Z again to redo it. You can use the CTRL-Z to toggle between undo and redo, to see which you like better for the last thing you did. Also, under Image/Adjustments, you can also do a Variations. This brings up a panel where you can increase or decrease just about anything you want, brightness, contrast, as well as adding more of a certain color, like Green, Yellow, Cyan, Red, Blue, and Magenta. Other than that, that's about all I do. My primary feature is the Auto Levels.

Edit:
And at the top of the Variations panel, you can also select what you want changed, as in the Shadows, Midtones, Highlights, or the Saturation. And you can use the slider so your selections are more coarse or more fine. The more coarse, the bigger the change. The more fine, the smaller the change. So if you wanted to add more red, but when you add red, it adds too much, you can go back, slide the slider to finer, and add red. It will add less. If still too much, start over again and slide it further to the finer and try again til you get what you want.

Both of those photos look great, Karen! It's really fun playing around with Photoshop, and I find the best way to learn things is to just test everything out.
