I love their looks. Their body looks a lot like a Doberman and there is some speculation that there may be Weim in a Doberman's make up, along with several other breeds. I didn't know that blue was not accepted. Wow. They sure are beautiful. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Far critter: I love your avitar. LOL!!! |

Many say that the Dobermans are what Weims were bred with to create the Blue. Others have it documented that the Blue came around as a genetic mutation. Since the Doberman and Weim come from similar lineages, I think that the Blue mutation is one that is likely in both breeds, since both breeds have shown the Blue. It's still a mutation and one that comes up because of the way their genes are coded. JMO |

So, what exactly was the reasoning behind disqualifying the blues? did it seem to be politically (show politics i mean) motivated?
Is there a reasonable belief that, say, 2 or 3 responsible weim breeders could begin a blue program, adhereing to code of ethics (with the exception of the color being 'outside standard') and gaining credibility and, perhaps, a secondary breed other than weim, or within a sub category or Weims?(i dont know how the akc w/ breeds works) Blue danes are my absolute top favorite coloring.....there is just something about that slate color that REALLY shows off a dogs features to me. Finding responsible, ethical blue breeders for Danes is HARD, for the same reasons, there not as popular as other colors, or people are uneducated on the genetics of color, so they fall for the "rare' or "unique" labels and end up supporting BYB's. |

Richnrissa, a dane breeder with my all breed club has a beautiful blue dane. He was at the parade with Topper and I, and he towered over him. WOW!
Most of the debate over the blue thing falls into whichever side you are or were on. Those that had blues felt it was very political, saying that because the blues were winning in the show ring, the gray people were trying to DQ them. The other side claimed that the Weim had always been gray and should only be gray. There were also many inacuracies claimed on both sides, and the blue coat color was continually lumped in with the longhaired coat. Blue is a dominant trait, where longhair is recessive. You could breed two shorthairs and get a longhaired... but you would never get a blue from two gray parents, unless there was an actual mutation in the gene to spontaneously produce the color. It's still a heavy debate. Look at that other thread for some ideas I have had about a new breed creation. I think it's called New Breed Creation, not necessarily designer dogs, and its in the debate section, or the thread link is at the OP of this thread. |

Wow! I like the blue ones better!!
Why would you wan them to be completely out of the registry and such?? If they are exactly the same with no health problems or such, what is so wrong with them?? Also, I am confused about the "starting a new breed" thing. What would you make different that would make it a "new" breed?? Either way, I think they are beautiful!! ![]() |

My biggest concern with blues is that they are being exploited relentlessly by BYB's who have "rare" AKC registered Weimaraners, that unknowing people buy because they are gorgeous, but, as in the danger of buying any dog for looks or hype alone, you get a substandard dog with health problems, temperament problems, etc, because BYBs simply don't care about the dog, just about lining their pockets. |
